Working with Soil

Traces from the Anthropocene

The project Working with Soil, is interested in soil and sediments that contain anthropogenic contaminants. The used soil have been gathered from urban and industrial areas of the Venice lagoon during this project. The contaminated soil has been analyzed and then used for traditional crafting methods in ceramics.

The results are displayed in a form of an evolving exhibition called 'Earth laboratory'. The laboratory will contain geological and environmental data based on the samples, different form of material samples and experimentation as well as a studio practice where the public can see the process of building and painting large clay forms.

The project is carried out by practice-based researchers in the area of craft from Aalto University's Department of Design in collaboration with Finnish Environment Institute SYKE.
