Institute of Sonology - Royal Conservatoire The Hague

Join the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague

The Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague has a 50-year tradition of education, research and production in the fields of electroacoustic music and computer music. Students can access well-equipped studios, workshops and concert halls, including a Wave Field Synthesis system and the most extensive voltage-controlled analogue studio currently in operation. The Institute of Sonology represents the Netherlands in the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music (ICEM) and has a partnership with the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM).

The Sonology one-year course runs from September until June. It is a full-time course. However, students can choose their subjects and put together a programme according to their own preferences. All lessons are conducted in the English language.

The two-year master’s programme in Sonology is focused on the realisation of individual research projects. The language of instruction is English. Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree relevant to this study. The Master of Music in Sonology is not in the first instance a continuation of the Sonology bachelor’s programme. Most of the current master’s students have a bachelor’s degree from elsewhere, in areas such as composition of electronic and/or acoustic music using fixed media, notation, improvisation or some combination of these, computer science, musicology, music perception, film studies, engineering or as a performing musician.
