Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

W1 professorship (with tenure track to W3) in »Acoustic Ecologies and Sound Studies«

Job Opening

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with 160 years of history that is rooted in the Bauhaus tradition. It combines science, technology, art and design. This approach determines the self-image of the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design, and Media. In addition to their subject-specific functions, the faculties are also committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to the interpenetration between art, science and practise.

Together with the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has an established and in-demand »Sound Art and Sound Design« study programme. The programme is to be expanded with the implementation of the following professorship.

As part of the Joint Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Programme to promote young research talent, the Faculty of Art and Design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar are seeking to fill a

W1 professorship (with tenure track to W3) in
»Acoustic Ecologies and Sound Studies«

Under this programme, the job advertisement is aimed at junior academics early on in their careers. The recruitment requirements of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (§ 89 ThürHG) apply.

The professorship is initially limited to three years. This is expected to be extended by a further three years, following a positive tenure evaluation. If a further evaluation after six years is also positive, then the W1 professorship will be converted into a W3 professorship without an additional job advertisement.

We are seeking artists/designers or young academics who have distinguished themselves through outstanding professional competence in the field of »Sound Ecology« and auditory culture in practice and research experience and who will apply this to teaching and research in both the department of Media Art and Design in the Faculty of Art and Design and the Institute of New Music and Jazz in the Faculty II of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.

Material, virtual and living environments all contain acoustic aspects, which in turn affect living beings. Thus, sound, alongside artistic and media design, plays a significant role as a design medium in architecture and urbanism, as well as in design and product development. The professorship will focus on acoustic environments and interaction strategies, as well as the study of humans in their natural, analogue and digital environments. Emphasis will be placed on investigating acoustic spheres within specific historical-anthropological, medial and cultural contexts.

Within this context, the professorship should be both artistically experimental and theoretically focussed. It is intended to act as a bridge between art and science. The candidate’s willingness to independently apply for artistic research projects and to participate in the faculty’s Ph.D. programme is expressly desired.

In addition to pedagogical aptitude, prerequisites for the position include a completed university degree, outstanding subject-related achievements in art or design and/or a doctoral degree in a subject-relevant field, as well as additional academic or subject-related achievements. The successful candidate must be willing and able to teach courses in English. The successful candidate is expected to be academically autonomous, to co-supervise the »Sound Art and Sound Design« studios, and to establish an artistic, pedagogical and scientific content network between Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers you appropriate resources to enable you to independently structure your professorship, including equipment, staffing in form of an employee position (75 %), a studio manager (50 %) and a share in secretarial capacity. We also support you with the performance of your duties via a wide range of advisory services and promotional funding.

We are looking for an individual who pairs excellence in their discipline with an openness to other subject areas, and who will play a part in further developing and shaping the university with an awareness of art and science’s responsibility to society. They are therefore expected to participate in inter-faculty collaborations and interdisciplinary study courses.

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar pursues an equal-opportunity, family-friendly human resources policy. The university’s strategic goals include increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research. The university was awarded a »TOTAL E-QUALITY« rating, and was given the title of »Gleichstellung: Ausgezeichnet!« (»Gender Equality: Outstanding!«) under the Federal Government-Länder Women Professors Programme. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar would therefore like to expressly invite qualified female academics to submit applications. Further information on the Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Programme can be found at https://www.tenuretrack.de/en/.

People with disabilities will receive preferential treatment if other qualifications are the same.
