Doctor Artium Programme @ KWDS: Call for Applications (until 28 Feb 2022)

The Dr.artium Programme at the Doctoral School for Artistic Research KWDS of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz KUG, in collaboration with Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdK, offers highly individualised doctoral studies on freely chosen topics in music and theatre. Evolving around epistemically oriented artistic practice in the fields of music and performing arts and related interdisciplinary practices, doctoral research at KWDS systematically integrates reflection through artistic experimentation with scholarly/scientific reflection.

Programme Highlights

Individualised Doctoral Committees of Four Professors per Project

Two internal supervisors (artistic and scholarly/scientific) from KUG or ZHdK; two external advisors (artistic and scholarly/scientific) from the international community; additional mentoring on methodological balance and on project management challenges.

Dedicated Subjects in Artistic Research

Two-day block seminars (required) on concepts, methodology, case studies, experimentation, documentation, publication, and funding acquisition, given by Professor of Artistic Research Dr. Deniz Peters on location in Graz and partly hybrid/online in English and German; the Department of Music and the Department of Performing Arts and Film at ZHdK offer further events and subjects.

Research Environment and Financial Support

Lab space @ KWDS in Graz for artistic experiments, professional audio-recording and filming equipment, specialised library; Travel support for artistic research presentations at international conferences, May Residency Stipends, and currently seven competitively awarded one-year scholarships towards research and maintenance; Dr.artium students in theatre can access facilities of the Institute for the Performing Arts and Film (IPF) at ZHdK.

Regular Events and Research Discussion Formats

(1) ARTikulationen, a yearly three-day Symposium-Festival of Artistic Research
(2) Salon 12B series of dialogues on practical and theoretical issues of artistic research with distinguished guests;
(3) SONify! – yearly festival of artistic research organised by doctoral students

Lively Research Community

Diverse community of currently 27 international doctoral students in artistic research, some of them residents in Graz; contact to senior researchers and to international research activities and clusters; alumni with successful careers as artists, gaining professorships, and doing postdoctoral research.

Activities at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK)

KWDS has a long-standing collaboration with ZHdK. Dr.artium students can take part in the Junior Research Group (JRG) and attend special-themed one-day colloquia with a focus on theatre/performing arts and an annual one-week-class on «research strategies in the performing arts» at Zurich campus.
