VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research

Reminder: Open Call VIS #8 - closing 11 February 2022

The deadline for the open call is 11 February 2022. The theme is “Of Rules and Alternatives” and editors are Serge von Arx and Eliot Mmantidi Moleba.

Human existence is based on rules. One of our primary social and cultural activity is to set rules, to organize coexistence and exchange. However, any first step in establishing or following a rule bears as much the momentum of its very rejection. The resulting tension oscillates between rules and their immanent alternatives, producing a liminal space where cracks inevitably occur, and synthesize a fertile ground for the arts. In this issue of VIS, which is organized as a dialogic editorial endeavor, we seek expositions that situate themselves between a claim of breaking with the rules and the establishments of new orders, work which thereby amalgamate or reject the very concept of this dichotomy by operating in its limbo. How does this ambiguity manifest in your work? Why does this liminal space materialise in your work, and what strategies – conceptual or concrete – do you use to navigate it? Do you plan for it, or is it something that emerged through the process? What boundaries is your work pushing or permeating, and vice versa?

Where to apply?

To apply for the open call: design an exposition proposal using the Research Catalogue (RC) and submit it for publication to the portal “VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research”. If your proposal is chosen by the Editorial Committee, you will be invited to further develop it into a complete exposition. The submitted full exposition will go through an editorial review – and an external open peer-review.

What should an exposition proposal consist of?

We invite contributors to expose the artistic research questions, contexts, practices and outcomes, and reflect on their contribution to practice, to research, insights and to knowledge production. The exposition proposal must include the author’s full name, a title and an abstract. Where the exposition uses a language other than English, an English translation of the abstract is required. The exposition proposal should outline the artistic research, how the artistic research will be exposed and how the exposition will make use of the Research Catalogue as a publishing platform. It is recommended that the proposal is developed beyond a text-only abstract to give examples of how and what media will be incorporated.
