Welcome to the MA programme Scenography

Are you a maker, designer or artist who works with spaces, environments or the creation of experiences? Do you want to expand your discipline and reflect on your own practice? Can you imagine life as a theatre stage and performing arts as a tool to explore our world? Then the MA programme Scenography at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, Netherlands might be a perfect match for you.

What we offer

  • A two-year full-time English-taught Master's programme.
  • Space, time and focus on your artistic research proposal in our spacious studio at the former Pastoe Factory.
  • An open, inclusive and international working environment.
  • An interdisciplinary course with students from various fields, who share a fascination and connectedness to Scenography and the urge to explore this discipline further.
  • Coaching, exchange and dialogue to develop new insights about your own work and methodologies.
  • Access to various spaces, workshops, black boxes and facilities of the HKU.
  • A network of alumni, professionals and cultural partners in Utrecht as well as abroad.
  • A curriculum built around Making, Thinking and Sharing, to:
    • Further develop, question and renew your craft in the context of (Expanded) Scenography and Artistic research.
    • Sharpen your own Artistic Practice and Research and the possibility to develop a constructive critical position.
    • New perspectives, including from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds, to widen your vision.
    • Theoretical tools to sharpen your articulation, your ideas and practice.
    • A community of peers to share your research and working practices.

Is the MA programme Scenography something for you?

We are seeking artists, makers or designers who are capable of working and conducting research independently and have their own drive. Curious minds who are interested in expanding their practice(s) and in sharing their research with peers and tutors and who want to focus for two years on process instead product.

We are interested in students who want to explore the context of Expanded Scenography and who want to focus on processual and artistic research questions instead of purely production.

The study program offers you conceptual deepening and broadening of professional skills, and frameworks for research. In the end you are able to critically reflect on the processes of your artistic work and to contextualize and present it.
