1. SAR CONFERENCE 2017:
The SAR 2017 Conference PLEASE SPECIFY! Sharing Artistic Research Across Disciplines took place in partnership with the University of the Arts Helsinki.
The PLEASE SPECIFY! Conference explored new perspectives on conditions of sharing research in the artistic field.Artist-researchers presented and reflected upon specific research constellations in which they engage.
The conference was arranged through an open call. The program involved 5 keynotes and 43 other presentations with cross-artistic and contextually differing points of view. The program had several different strands, namely, performative presentations, text-based working groups, collaborative sessions and interventions. The conference was attended by 215 participants from 22 countries. You can view the keynotes here.

2. GENERAL ASSEMBLY of SAR
The 2017 General Assembly of SAR took place in Helsinki on 30 April 2017.
The GA endorsed the President’s Report on the 2016 activities, as well as the Financial Report for that year and the Working Budget for 2017.
Elections of the Executive Board of SAR:
Due to the changes of the election rules the following members remain in the board for another year: Alexander Damianisch, Austria Johan A. Haarberg, Norway Leena Rouhiainen, Finland Giaco Schiesser, Switzerland
Henk Borgdorff, The Netherlands, was re-elected as the president of SAR for another two years.
Gabriele Schmid, Germany, was re-elected as a board member of SAR for another two years.
Geir Strøm, Norway, was elected as a board member for two years.
3. Launch of the SAR Announcement Service
The SAR Announcement Service (SARA) will soon be launched. This will offer an opportunity for SAR members and others to present information, news, events, exhibitions, performances, publications, available new positions etc. The announcement fees for the first year will be quite modest, and with a reduced price for our individual and institutional members. When all procedures are in place, we will send a special newsletter for this opportunity.
4. SAR in Venice
The Society of Artistic Research will be present in Venice at the Nordic Pavilion during the 6th and 7th of June. Members of the Board will be there to present the Activities of SAR, especially the Research Catalogue and the Journal for Artistic Research. Participants are invited to share their points of view, provide experience about the development of Artistic Research accompanied by SAR's activities in the field. The input of the participants, the community of people committed to Artistic Research is vital for shared steps into the future. Three presentation workshops will be held, each about 3 hours, including breaks.
In the sessions (taking place 3 times) activities of the international Society for Artistic Research will be presented:
6 June: EVENT 1: 10:00 - 12:30 // EVENT 2: 14:30 – 17:00
7 June: EVENT 3: 10:00 – 12:30

The Research Pavilion is a platform for art and research that will be open in Venice from May - October in the context of the 57th Venice Biennale. The Research Pavilion is created and hosted by Uniarts Helsinki and its partners.
5. Ruukku – Studies in Artistic Research
RUUKKU – Studies in artistic research is a Research Catalogue journal hosted by the Uniarts Helsinki.
RUUKKU 8 is a special issue with the theme of Conditions of Sharing.It supplements the Please Specify! conference by offering a peer-reviewed publication platform related to the conference theme. The proposals for research expositions were submitted by May 21st in the RC catalogue and the issue is expected to be published in fall 2017.
6. Research Catalogue Exposition Prize
SAR will launch the RC Exposition Price for 2017 this autumn. The price will be an annual event, where the most innovative published exposition in that year will be rewarded. The exposition may be presented under all RC portals or by self-publishing. There will be two basic requirements: The exposition has to be published and text should be in English. The Executive Board will appoint the jury, and the winner of the price of € 500 will be presented during the annual Conference/ General Assembly.
7. Artistic Research Funding Agencies Seminar
The Society for Artistic Research has initiated an Artistic Research Funding Agencies Seminar: an Expert Meeting for Funding Agencies to be held in Vienna on Sept 14 and 15 2017.
The aim of this event is to bring together agencies active in the field of art and research funding. The event offers the opportunity to discuss shared interests. Suggested themes of discussion are the visibility and internationalisation of artistic research, as well as challenges and achievements in the field of procedures, documentation and disseminations of results. At the event, the agencies will present themselves with a focus on the potential development of shared values and criteria for artistic research in relation to funding and quality assessment.
Confirmed participants are Austrian Science Fund (FWF) / PEEK, Danish Ministry of Culture, Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), Norwegian Artistic Research Programme (NARP), Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Swedish Research Council and Volkswagenstiftung.
