1. SAR CONFERENCE 2018
The ninth SAR International Conference on Artistic Research, Artistic Research Will Eat Itself, will take place at University of Plymouth (UK) on 11-13 April 2018.
Further information on the conference programme and registration will be available on the conference webpage at http://www.sarconference2018.org/ Registration will be open from mid-February.
SAR General Assembly will convene during the conference on the morning of Friday 13 April 2018.
2. SAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2018
The SAR General Assembly 2018 will take place at the University of Plymouth on Friday 13 April at 10.30 (exact venue to be announced). The Executive Board invites the membership to attend in accordance with Art 15.3 of the Society (http://www.societyforartisticresearch.org/archive/legal-documents). The preliminary agenda has been sent to the members via email.
To participate in the General Assembly the individual or institutional membership fee for 2018 must have been paid before the meeting takes place. All papers regarding the General Assembly will be distributed 10 days before the meeting to the members registered with payment no later than 15 days before the meeting.
Included in the call for General Assembly is the announcement for Executive Board nominations that contains information required for making a nomination. Attached to the call you will also find the endorsed Election Procedures. The final date for nominations for the 2018 elections will be Friday 16 February 2018.

3. SAR ANNUAL PRIZE FOR BEST RC EXPOSITION 2017
The Annual Prize for Excellent Research Catalogue Expositions for innovative, experimental new formats of publication will be awarded for the first time at the General Assembly of SAR in Plymouth, 13 April 2018.
4. SAR PORTAL PARTNERSHIP - PORTAL PARTNER MEETING DECEMBER 2017
Twice a year, SAR arranges a meeting for those institutional members that have signed up as Portal Partners, which gives them the opportunity to create their own portal entrance at the Research Catalogue (RC). At this stage, we have the following partner members:
Last year the autumn Portal Partner Meeting took place in Bergen over two days in December, with the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen and the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme as local hosts. Twenty-three participants, representing nearly all the partners, were present. Main issues on the agenda included:
We also arranged a workshop session for new members and new administrators on the RC, mainly focusing on general and portal use, admin roles and responsibilities, creating content on the RC etc.
Our next SAR Portal Partner Meeting will take place in Zurich, with Zurich University of the Arts as local host, over two days in late May or early June. All portal partners will be invited to the event. A detailed agenda will be distributed before the meeting, focusing on relevant topics for the partners and on RC-developments. We will probably also arrange a similar workshop as done during the two last meetings. There is still room for more people participating, and there is no restriction on how many each partner may have present in the meeting. 5. FUNDING AGENCIES: EXPERT MEETING II - OSLO 2018
Initiated by the Society for Artistic Research, the second Art and Research Funding - Expert Meeting will take place in Oslo, Norway, upon invitation by the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme (NARP). Colleagues from different funding agencies will come together to exchange their experiences within funding activities. As an accompanying event NARP invites artistic research projects to display the quality and variety of their funding activities. In general, the aim of the core event is to bring together experts in the field and offer them the opportunity to discuss shared interests. At the event, the agencies will present current developments.
The first funding meeting took place in Vienna 2017. Then the participants - Austrian Science Fund, the Danish Ministry of Culture, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme, the Swedish Research Council, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Volkswagenstiftung - began a conversation that will be continued and expanded upon in Oslo for the profit of the community of artistic research. 6. S A R A - THE SOCIETY FOR ARTISTIC RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT SERVICE
As you may have seen, we have published the first announcements through S A R A, the Society for Artistic Research Announcement Service on the Research Catalogue (RC), and we are just now launching our on-line booking and payment system for this service.
SARA will enable individual and institutional members as well as non-members to distribute announcements of relevance to the artistic research environments, such as symposia, conferences, exhibitions, performances, publications, study programmes and available positions etc. via a dedicated email list, reaching colleagues who have registered at the RC.
SARA will have a well-targeted and wide reach: There are more than 9000 users on the Research Catalogue; SARA will reach most of these practitioners in the area of artistic research worldwide. SAR members will pay 50 euro per announcement this first year, while the rate for non-SAR members will be 100 euro per announcement in 2018. After this initial period, the rates will be adjusted.

7) SAR CORRESPONDENTS
The Society for Artistic Research is the central node for an internationally widely branched network of artist-researchers, working in a variety of local, regional and national institutional and intellectual environments.
SAR’s Journal for Artistic Research (JAR) strives to include the voices of people from all over the world, witnessed by its pool of authors, peer reviewers and editors. Artists from countries worldwide use the Research Catalogue to build, to document and to publish their practice as research. However, other activities of SAR - including its annual conferences - are until now mostly confined to Europe.
It is a fact (and a strength and bias at the same time) that the Society for Artistic Research has a strong membership base in Europe, more specifically in northwestern Europe. However, it’s mission to nurture, connect and disseminate artistic research as a specific practice of creating knowledge and insight, in and outside academic institutions reaches beyond the mentioned regional border.
In order to connect with and to reach out to other regions in the world where artistic research is or is not yet on the agenda, the Society for Artistic Research has installed a scheme of ‘Correspondents’: artists and scholars dedicated to the field of artistic research, who both represent SAR in their local, regional or national environments, and report to the SAR community from their environment about issues pertaining to artistic research.
For this purpose, SAR will invite individuals and groups (artist/scholars) from a wide variety of countries and regions to act as SAR Correspondents. They will be provided with support and space in our online communication (newsletters, SAR website and Research Catalogue) to contribute to the international research environment and infrastructure that SAR offers, thereby strengthening the global community of artistic research. SAR Correspondents will also act as local ‘agents’, probing the ground to host events co-organised by SAR, thereby strengthening the local communities of artistic research.
We are very happy to publish in this newsletter two reports by SAR Correspondents: one about artistic research in Chile, by Maria Jose Contreras, and one about the condition of artistic research in Argentina, by Eduardo Molinari.
