Pratique singulière : Resident Artist or Art Educator

ONE-YEAR OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS OR ART EDUCATORS TO TEACH IN FRENCH
2019-2020 / 2020-2021

Description of the position
The position is a one-year, full-time position of professor (salary and rank commensurate with experience) in visual and media arts for an artist or art educator whose practice has been internationally recognized.
- Teaching and mentoring students in all three degree programmes of the study of visual and media arts (Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral);
- Research and studio practice at the École des arts visuels et médiatiques;
- Community service at the university or in the larger artistic milieu of Montréal.

Requirements
The candidate’s application must provide evidence of:
o A mastery of both spoken and written French.
o A diploma of graduate studies in the domain of visual and media arts or equivalent;
o A minimum of four years of pertinent professional experience and a demonstrable and
recognized professional competence in the field of contemporary art;
o A sustained artistic practice that has been widely shown in established national and
international institutions;
o A practical and personal experience in different approaches of contemporary art.
o A theoretical and critical examination of these practices.
o The capacity and enthusiasm to transmit ideas and experience to a wide variety of students and to collaborate with fellow faculty.
o A capacity to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and to participate in activities that promote the university’s visibility as well as an ability to develop new programs or
orientations;


STARTING DATE (FIXED TERM: 1 YEAR):
AUGUST 1 2019, for the academic year 2019-2020
AUGUST 1 2020, for the academic year 2020-2021

SALARY: According to the terms of the Syndicat des professeurs de l’Université du Québec (SPUQ-UQAM) agreement.

Interested candidates must submit a dated, and signed, curriculum vitæ in French. They must include a description of their teaching experience. A letter of presentation should describe what is their interest for this position and how they envisage their contribution to the École des arts visuels et médiatiques. Candidates must submit a dossier of visual documentation of their art practice and research and a text describing the personal creative project they intend to undertake for this period (details indicated here). Finally, they must provide two letters of reference.

They must indicate for which of the periods they are interested in teaching (they may apply for both, but will be hired for only one of the two periods).

Please note that the Université du Québec à Montréal is a French-speaking university and consequently the position requires teaching in French. The successful candidate will have a good command of French at the time of the hire.

Montréal’s École des Beaux-arts founded in 1922 was one of the first art schools in Canada. It became the Department of Fine Arts in 1969 as part of the emerging network of the University of Québec. In 2000, it evolved into the École des arts visuels et médiatiques with a curriculum examining current issues in art and multidisciplinary projects. It is a flagship school as the influence of its faculty and graduates on the national and international art scene confirms.
