Lecture Series “Knowing in Performing” – Artistic Research at the mdw

The new lecture series “Knowing in Performing” at the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna will investigate the cross-disciplinary dynamics of Artistic Research with a special focus on the performing arts. The second lecture of the series takes place on November 13^th with the violonist and artistic researcher Barbara Lüneburg, newly appointed professor of artistic research and head of the scientific and artistic doctoral school at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz.

TransCoding—From ‘Highbrow Art’ to Participatory Culture

Social Media – Art – Research

Abstract

What do K-pop artist PSY and gender theorist Judith Butler, contemporary music and pop culture have in common? The artistic research project TransCoding –From ‘Highbrow Art’ to Participatory Culture (PEEK AR 259-G21, 2014-17), funded by the Austrian Science Fund, engaged with this question through the topic of participatory culture by using social media in the context of artistic practice. TransCoding encouraged participation and shared discourse in the new arts by actively involvin an online audience in the making of an artwork on the topic of ‘identity’. As part of her lecture at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Barbara Lüneburg will perform the multimedia artwork Slices of Life (2016/17) for violin and voice, video and soundtrack that forms a main artistic outcome of the project. Lüneburg will also reflect on the artistic productions of TransCoding under the aspect of participatory culture and social media; she will critically shed light on questions of authority and shared authorship, look into the influence of the research project on the participating artists and the community, and trace knowledge production and dissemination in artistic research by way of creating, performing, and sharing.

CV

Barbara Lüneburg is an internationally acknowledged violinist and artistic researcher working in contemporary classical art music and multimedia art. From 2014-2018 she was director and lead artist of the artistic research project TransCoding—From ‘Highbrow Art’ to Participatory Culture funded by the Austrian Science Fund. With the participation of the TransCoding online community she composed the 30-minutes artwork Slices of Life (2016/17) on the topic of ‘identity.’ In May 2018, her book From ‘Highbrow Art’ to Participatory Culture. Social Media – Art – Research was published by transcript, Bielefeld. Lüneberg’s main research focus lies on performance practice. Since October 2018 she is full professor of artistic research at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz and head of the scientific and artistic doctoral school there. www.barbara-lueneburg.com
