No concept without conceptualism

Concept music as a challenge for listening and understanding

In recent years, conceptual approaches have increasingly emerged in New Music. Not the sound alone, but a concept also determines a piece, i.e. accompanying information is often part of the work, the additional use of text, video, performance. How does this affect listening, knowledge, understanding and interpretation? The lecture-performance shows practice and theory of concept music.

Johannes Kreidler (1980) is a composer, concept and media artist. He studied composition, electronic music and music theory in Freiburg and The Hague, among others with Mathias Spahlinger. In 2012, he was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis. Currently he is teaching at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. His works have been featured at festivals including Donaueschinger Musiktage, Ultraschall Berlin, MaerzMusik Berlin, Eclat Stuttgart, Warsaw Autumn, Ultima Oslo, Musica Strasbourg, Gaudeamus Music Week, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Venice Biennale.
