Professor (WSA) in Artistic Development Work Focus: Educating the future innovators in contemporary music

A position is vacant at Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) as professor with special responsibilities (WSA) in Artistic Development Work (ADW), as of 1 August 2019.

 

Background

RMC has decided to continue and further intensify the development of the innovative elements of its study programmes, focusing on inventive inquiry. In this connection, the Conservatory wishes to appoint a professor with special responsibilities (WSA) to lead this development process on the musician and composition programs in close dialogue with the other teachers at RMC, and with stakeholders in the Conservatory’s environment.

The Conservatory’s vision is to educate the future innovators of contemporary music, and in this way make a significant difference to the field. RMC’s graduates are expected to be able to make a strong contribution to the development of the artistic field, but must also be able to contribute to solving more general societal challenges.

In recent years, RMC has focused on strengthening the students’ competencies in relation to creating new artistic content and innovative solutions. The Conservatory has developed the subject area Artistic Development Work (ADW), which now forms the backbone of the education of musicians and composers, and is a central element in the education of music producers. The subject focuses on the artistic process of the individual student, and also develops the student’s reflections on artistic methods, results and context. The subject area moreover focuses on the student’s competencies in relation to creating, developing and implementing artistic projects. The subject is based on knowledge drawn from Artistic Research (AR), and is primarily run by teachers who themselves carry out AR projects.

 

The position

The position involves teaching in the subject area of Artistic Development Work and artistic research, pedagogical development activities, curriculum development and coordination, as well as participation in examinations.

 

Qualifications

An overall assessment will be undertaken of the applicant’s qualifications, emphasising:

• An artistic career at a high international level, characterized by an independent artistic expression, within rhythmic contemporary music
• Artistic research of a high international standard
• Experience in curriculum development at higher education level
• Teaching qualifications at higher education level
• The ability to formulate an ambitious vision and strategy for the development of the subject area of Artistic Development Work
  
  

The application

The application must include:

• Possible examination diplomas
• A summary of the applicant’s artistic career in rhythmic contemporary music. The applicant must mark five publications/works that he or she wishes to be considered in the assessment.
• Documentation for completed artistic research projects of a high international standard
• Documentation of experience in curriculum development at higher education level
• Documentation of teaching qualifications at higher education level
• A description of the applicant’s vision and strategy for the subject area of Artistic Development Work, including considerations of how the applicant, in his or her teaching, will work with:
  • Performance
  • Creating works
  • Development of the student’s independent artistic profile
  • Reflection on artistic processes and results, and the communication of these
  • Contextualisation of the artistic work
  • Project work and project management

Salary and employment conditions

The position is part-time, with an average of 30 hours per week.

The appointment is limited to a fixed term of five years, with the possibility of an extension for a further three years.

The employment will be in accordance with the collective agreement in force between the Ministry of Finance and a number of organisations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academics in public service and the circular of 8 June 2004 concerning the employment structure for artistic/scientific staff at music conservatories/academies under the Danish Ministry of Culture. It will be possible to negotiate qualification supplements depending on your competences and experience. 

Sideline occupation will be accepted to the extent that this is compatible with handling the job as professor. 

The assessment of applicants will be made in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Culture’s Executive Order no. 1208 of 12 October 2010 on the Employment of Artistic/Scientific staff at Certain Educational Institutions under the Danish Ministry of Culture. The Principal appoints the members of an expert assessment committee to conduct a professional assessment of the applications received. When the assessment is complete, the applicant will receive that part of the assessment that relates to the individual applicant. Applicants who are called for interview must participate in a teaching test prior to the interview.
