In 2016, the artistic research project "GAPPP – Gamified Audiovisual Performance and Performance Practice" was launched at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics – IEM – of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. In GAPPP, a team of researchers investigates the artistic potential of elements from computer games in the context of audiovisual composition and performance. A large number of questions grouping around this key interest have been investigated and more than a dozen new artistic works composed and performed that explore those questions from a practice based and theoretical side.

During the symposium "GAMIFIED COMPOSITION AND PERFORMANCE – A SYMPOSIUM IN ARTISTIC RESEARCH" the most significant outcomes of the research project will be presented and discussed in the form of talks and artistic performances. The symposium will bring together an international mix of artists, performers and speakers from the fields of game philosophy, game theory, audiovisual art and musicology. The works that we will present were created as part of the GAPPP research, or have been especially commissioned for this symposium. The focus of the symposium lies not only in the reflection of the findings of this particular research project, but in discussing and opening up new questions and perspectives that emerge from the intersection of artistic practice, aesthetics, game elements and mechanics.
