Lecturer in contemporary performance

Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy is recruiting a part-time (60%) lecturer in contemporary performance

for a 5-year term starting on 1 January 2021.

In order to ensure the vitality of the arts and to make way for new initiatives, we invite world-leading professionals for fixed-term (non-tenured) positions to bring the latest practices and developments from the field.

The Centre for Joint Studies at the Theatre Academy plans and organises optional courses for both BA and MA students. The centre is responsible for organising the joint general studies at the BA level as well as for the optional study modules in Contemporary Performance and Dramaturgy at the MA level. The centre participates in various projects and is in its own way responsible for the development of tuition at the Theatre Academy.

Job description

The lecturer in contemporary performance is part of the staff of the Theatre Academy’s Centre for Joint Studies at the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki). The duty of the lecturer is to plan master-level studies comprising a total of 35 ECTS credits. The studies are expected to reflect on e.g. themes integral to contemporary performance, including dramaturgy, performance practices, performance art and postdramatic theatre. Besides providing instruction, the lecturer is also in charge of selecting hourly-paid teachers for various courses. The planning will be a collaborative effort between the centre’s director, degree programmes of the Theatre Academy and Academy of Fine Arts.

The lecturer in contemporary performance is involved in the development of the Theatre Academy’s joint studies and teaching cooperation within the entire Uniarts Helsinki and between the academies and contributes to various collaborative teaching projects, especially in relation to joint studies organised with the Academy of Fine Arts on the Sörnäinen Campus. The lecturer participates in the work of the Theatre Academy’s administrative bodies and in the development of the Centre for Joint Studies, Uniarts Helsinki and the Sörnäinen Campus. The lecturer actively follows the field of contemporary performance and art, develops their personal artistic and pedagogical competence and engages in interaction with the surrounding society and in global contexts.

Eligibility and competence requirements

A person selected for the lecturer’s position is required to have a master’s degree or equivalent artistic merits, versatile teaching skills and experience in utilising artistic activities and/or research in teaching as well as pedagogical studies or pedagogical competence gained in some other manner. Other requirements include strong merits in working in the arts and/or research sector, as well as experience in Finnish or international cooperation and societal influence. The lecturer in contemporary performance is required to have expertise in modern forms of performing arts particularly at a practical level and to have good cooperation and interaction skills.

The knowledge of theory and research in the field and in contemporary art is considered an advantage.

Applicants’ teaching skills will be evaluated based on the available documentation and for the short-listed applicants based on a separate teaching demonstration. The teaching demonstrations will be organised in the beginning of November.

Language skills

The languages of instruction at the Theatre Academy are Finnish, Swedish, and English. The person appointed to the position of lecturer in contemporary performance may teach in Finnish and/or English. All applicants are required to have an excellent command of English. Language skills will be assessed in relation to the duties of the post.

Salary

The job-specific salary component will be based on level 5-6 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The monthly salary at the beginning of the employment (60%) will be approximately EUR 2,000-2,500.
