Invitation to defense and final presentation of Charlotta Ruth, Artistic Research PhD Programme (PhD in Art)

The Artistic Research PhD Programme at Zentrum Fokus Forschung kindly invites onsite and online visitors to the PhD defense of Charlotta Ruth’s dissertation project Choreographic Contingencies for On-and Offline. The examination committee is made up of: Univ.-Prof. Jan Svenungsson (chair), University of Applied Arts Vienna, Univ.-Prof. Dr.phil. Margarete Jahrmann (supervisor), Univ.- Prof. Rebecca Hilton (external appraiser, Stockholm University of the Arts).

Departing from the research question “What is liveness and what can it be?” The PhD project Choreographic Contengiences for on- and offline explores how practices from choreography and participatory art can be bridged to hybrid and online practices and also how liveness can be increased in asynchronous communication. To grasp what takes place in the friction between real life and the digital perspective, Charlotta Ruth proposes “meta-liveness”, a concept that embraces the sensation of being both inside and outside of an experience simultaneously. Bridging knowledge between online art practices, performance studies, media studies and digital ethnography, Ruth’s reflexive documentation fathoms how new ways of being together online have effected the traditional sense of the “here and now” both opening it up towards other degrees of togetherness and presence, but also critically asking how the theatrical contract and the onboarding to a theatrical experience shift when the “here and now” is influenced by ongoing parallel online realities.
