The Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki is recruiting

Postdoctoral Researcher

in the thematic area of artist pedagogy for a fixed-term employment (project) contract from 1 August 2023 (or as agreed) to 31 Dec 2024. The position is part-time (50 %).

Fields of research and tasks

The duties of the Postdoctoral Researcher will include conducting their own research in the thematic area of artist pedagogy in the artistic research of the performing arts. Research into the education of artists has been recognized internationally as a new research field that interests arts universities. Artist pedagogy at Uniarts Helsinki is an emerging research area examining how artists are educated in higher education institutions. Research in the field of artist pedagogy is conducted in our three academies, the Sibelius Academy, the Theatre Academy, and the Academy of Fine Arts. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be situated at the Performing Arts Research Centre of the Theatre Academy and will collaborate with the academic staff working in this specific field at the university’s other units.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, in addition to individual research and publication activities, your tasks may also include research development work on behalf of Uniarts Helsinki, such as, project planning, applying for funding as well as other communal university activities. A possible candidate is expected to have an art practice at a professional level in the fields  represented at the Performing Arts Research Centre at Uniarts Helsinki. Eligibility requirements

We expect you to have the following:

  • a suitable doctoral degree from a Finnish or an internationally recognized university, granted within the last five years
  • university level work experience in the thematic area of artist pedagogy
  • a demonstrated record of activities in research and art practice including publications in the thematic area of artist pedagogy
  • the skills to carry out independent research
  • good communication and interaction skills
  • the ability to work as part of a team of researchers and an international research network
  • the capacity and willingness to contribute to the research community in artist pedagogy

Language skills

The languages of instruction at Uniarts Helsinki are Finnish, Swedish, and English. For this position, an excellent command of English is required.

Working time and salary

The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. Monthly salary at the beginning of employment will be approximately €1650-1800 for the part-time (50 %) position, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and professional experience. The position requires working in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship. Thus, the assignment requires the Postdoctoral Researcher to reside in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship.
