ACD-Agency for Cultural Diplomacy

open call to participate in free art_science workshops

Let´s rain ...

Sessions

The workshop is part of the ERASMUS+ project "The Rhythm of Nature" activities that will be presented in March/April 2024 during the all-day event in Vienna (hybrid format). Further presentations in Austria and internationally are planned.
In collaboration with our partners from Sevilla and Warsaw, we have the opportunity to work on new ERASMUS+ projects and establish a solid ground for artistic research, art & science festivals, co-develop art productions, and whatever comes ...

More details will be provided by your registration.
Engaged participants in the project do not need to register, they just confirm their participation on the 25th of November.

During the workshop series (3 meetings), participants will explore exercises developed for the script which includes insights for environmental education with methods grounded in dance arts & linguistics.

It is a unique opportunity to elaborate solo and group presentations on the relevant topics connected with relational cultures on the interface of dance arts, environmental humanities, and cultural diplomacy.
Participants will receive the certificate of attendance and working materials.

Invited are interested students and professionals in dance,-music,-fine arts students, researchers, dance teachers, DaZ & DaF teachers, teachers who work with blind & visually impaired, blind & visually impaired students, who will attend 3 x 2-hours workshops in Vienna (Dschungel, Studio1)

starting on the 25th of November 2023

12.00 - 1.30 pm

Certificate of attendance and working materials will be provided

The aim of this workshop is to explore, through a set of practical exercises created by Tatjana Christelbauer, how rhythmic patterns and imaginative attempts are changing by the "shift" into diverse linguistic landscapes.

The "rain" theme brings into play exploration triggered by listening to or imagining rain rhythms while pronouncing the term “rain” in various languages as an impulse for the creation of bodily movement sequences in various dynamics... Sensorial awareness of “rain” in its variety of dynamics, forms, components (such as drops), cycles, and elements is explored in its interpersonal communication potentials. This experimentation is designed to inform a creative team process in which a group of dancers produces novel choreographic forms. In addition, associative and emotive dimensions, such as emotional states or memories connected to rain, and symbolical implications of terms such as “acid raindrops” and “cloud of acid drops” are used to widen the creative potentials of participants concerning their expression and communication with each other.

The embodied language viewpoint explains why the body is sensitive to linguistic expressions and can be infused with meaning. For example, it can explain why speaking about rain can trigger immersive images of rain and shed light on why words are very effectively used to instruct movements, in dance contexts and others.

Enriching somatic experience through words

A multitude of somatic practices works with imagery that is encapsulated in verbal instructions and that “unfolds” in the locus of the body.

Excerpts from a scientific essay written by Dr. Michel Kimmel, the scientific reviewer in the project

The workshop “Let´s rain …”

is composed of warming-up exercises, thought experiments, dance meditation, guided imagination, and choreographic composition, while exploring the rhythm as a lived experience.

The Rhythm of Nature is explored by examples of the Rhythm of Rain in a variety of forms, and diversity of expressions, in particular through articulatory and imaginative experiences in a multilingual setting.

Applying on concept of rhythm as a lived experience developed by Margaret H`Doubler, rhythms will be explored as recruiting patterns of measured energy nested in scales from the shifts from speech muscles to bodily movement sequences. Improvised movement sequences are initiated by guided imagination evoked through articulatory phonetic exercise, then repeated, interpreted, and articulated in various tempi and dynamics, becoming a pattern, that enables synchronization within the situated context and environment and can be performed as a choreographic composition.

The challenge is given while synchronizing diverse rhythms and dynamics, forms of expressions, and tempi.

The metaphor of "acid rain" can also be used to explore the ways in which negative or harmful communication patterns can erode and damage relationships, highlighting the importance of practicing diversity awareness and promoting positive communication.

By understanding the rain cycle and how pollutants can be removed through natural processes, individuals can learn to purify communication and reduce the effects of poisoning.

In terms of connecting these ideas with symbolic interaction in dance, the metaphor of "rain" can be incorporated into dance movements and choreography to explore the themes of purification and cleansing in relational cultures, deepen their understanding of the impact of natural phenomena on human circadian rhythm, moods & states of mind relational cultures and needs.

The exercises are part of the long-term research and practices within the last 2 decades. Some documentary insights are written on the webpage:
