LUCA School of Arts

Vice dean and professor of artistic research

Vice dean and professor of artistic research

Some 50 doctorates in the arts have been defended in recent years, nearly 100 doctorates are ongoing. LUCA considers artistic research as a continuum from fundamental to practice-oriented research, and has some 7 million internal research funds, which are an increasingly successful lever for attracting external funding (national and international). The development of artistic research within the School of Arts and the university is led by a vice dean. We are looking for a senior artistic researcher to take up this role. The mandate is for four years, renewable once to eight years. The candidate is also expected to conduct his/her own artistic research within one of the research units and take up teaching assignments within undergraduate and graduate programmes.

Duties
Research

During the first years of your appointment, you focus on the role of vice dean. Nevertheless, you keep on developing artistic research within your own specialism, embedded in one of LUCA's research units, where you take the lead of the research within a specific research cluster:

  • Build and supervise a team of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers and coordinate its activities.
  • Attract external research funding.
  • Create, display, exhibit and publish the outcomes of your research within relevant settings and channels.
Education

Apart from your responsabilities as a vice dean, you are still involved in educational activities:

  • Designing educational activities, tutoring or educational concepts to provide education tailored to the student audience at undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Developing educational activities within the framework of active and research based education.
  • Mentoring students in the conception of both the artistic and the reflective aspects of final tests and interim research assignments.
  • Managing assistants within a course unit or cluster of course units.
Service
  • Assist insetting up and realising LUCA and faculty research policy in the role of vice dean for research (mandate for at least four years from the start of appointment).
  • Scientific, societal and internal services related to your own research and research unit.
Profile
  • You have a PhD in the arts or within a related field.
  • You have experience within higher arts education and artistic research, preferably in a managerial role.
  • You will develop a vision for the further development of artistic research at LUCA and KU Leuven, in Flanders and Europe.
  • You possess leadership, organisational and teaching skills.
  • You are willing to take responsibility and continue to develop your professionalism and expertise.
  • You are collegial and capable of collaboration.
  • Knowledge of Dutch and English are required, in line with the higher education decree requirements in Flanders. At least you are willing to learn these languages at short notice.
  • You are loyal to the mission, vision, strategy and policies of LUCA School of Arts and KU Leuven.
Offer

You will work in an environment where respect and integrity define our basic attitude, where we see sustainability and diversity as an asset, and where quality is our motivation. In the coming years, we want to give our School of Arts an identity as an actor in society, let our education institute become part of a laboratory, complement our offer with demand-driven initiatives, and open up our multicampus reality to a network.

LUCA and KU Leuven offer a combined appointment as associate or full professor (depending on the candidate's experience and profile): 90% within LUCA (OP3) and 10% within KU Leuven (ZAP). From the start of your appointment, you will assume the position of vice dean of research, for a renewable four-year term. As vice dean, you lead the research heads and are a member of LUCA's executive committee, headed by the dean.
