Welcome to Uniarts Helsinki's Research Institute Newsletter

The new Research Institute of the University of Arts Helsinki began its operation in Fall 2023

The Research Institute is a joint unit of Uniarts Helsinki, whose task is to develop the university’s research and promote interdisciplinary and cross-artistic research projects and the application of strategic research funding together with the vice rector of research, the vice deans of the academies and the directors of the doctoral schools. The Research Institute currently employs two professors, four permanent and six fixed term researchers as well as hosts 35 visiting researchers. It additionally supports four thematic research networks in the areas of artist pedagogy (responsible person, professor Magnus Quaife), educational research in the arts (cERAda, responsible person, professor Eeva Anttila), artistic research (CfAR, responsible person, professor Otso Aavanranta) and historical research of the arts and artistic life (Hifo, responsible person, professor Anne Kauppala).
The networks strengthen the research community by bringing researchers working in the different art fields and units of the university together. Their connections with the national and international fields of art and science strengthen the institutes research activities. The networks support the deepening of the contents of the theme area’s research and related expertise and thus promote the significance and quality of research. The research networks organize researcher meetings, domestic and international research events, and prepare cross-artistic and multidisciplinary research funding applications related to the theme area. The institute is led by the Head of Research Institute, Leena Rouhiainen, and its operations are advanced by the Research Institute’s steering committee that meets monthly. In addition to the head of the institute, the committee members are: professor Otso Aavanranta, professor Eeva Anttila, professor Magnus Quaife, professor Anne Kauppala, university researchers Tuulikki Laes and Timothy Smith, head of research services Merja Sagulin, planning manager Helena Haimi, controller Miia Putkinen and expert Tii Salminen.

Upcoming events in Spring 2024

Research Institute activities that are open to attendees outside Uniarts Helsinki:

International symposium Gender and Musicianship in North(-)/Eastern Europe registration is open from 30 November 2023–1 February 2024.

The Research Institute's cERAda educational research in the arts network arranges a research project opening seminar Musicians in Society and Society in Musicians on 8.2.2024 between 10–15 at Helsinki Music Centre, Sonore venue.

The Research Institute's cERAda educational research in the arts and artist-pedagogy research networks as well as Uniarts Helsinki's three academies, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Sibelius Academy and the Theatre Academy, will host Ableism in Higher Arts Education on May 29 between 13–17. More information will be provided closer to the later date.


Past activities in Fall 2023


Gestures and Languages: Innovative Approaches to Artistic Thinking and Artist Pedagogy Symposium planned by professor Magnus Quaife and university researcher Luis Guerra was held on Nov 16th at the facilities of the Theatre Academy.

cERAda network was an active partner in FAST45, a 3-year Erasmus+ project exploring the future of higher arts education in Europe. Closing by the end of 2023, the project's various outcomes can be accessed through the FAST45 Learning Platform. This includes the Arts School Futures Data Map, featuring interviews on the implactful roles of artists, current challenges, trends, utopias, and dystopias in creative work. Moreover, the platform offers the Arts School Futures Lab Guidelines crafted by University Researcher Kai Lehikoinen and Lecturer Satu Tuittila, along with the four scenarios and policy recommendations developed by the consortium.

cERAda was likewise involved in the following three-year projects that ended in 2023:

ERASMUS+ Rethinking Music Performance in European Higher Education Institutions (REACT) (contact person Mieko Kanno)


Perspectives on Music in Times of War Symposium arranged jointly by the institutes thematic network historical research of the arts and artistic life (Hifo) and the Sibelius Academy was held on November 20–21 at the Helsinki Music Centre.
