Empowering arts and culture to drive the climate transition

Curious about how arts and culture can not only adapt to the climate crisis, but also drive the transition to a sustainable and regenerative economy? 

On Monday 11 March, NTNU’s art academy will launch a new research and innovation action funded by Horizon Europe: PACESETTERS will explore not only the theoretical but also the very practical potential of art and culture, heritage and creativity to become a key driver of the climate transition. 

The project aims to generate knowledge from collaborative, artistic and practice-based research to keep pace with the transition. Over the next three years, we will propose and test innovative and sustainable ideas across creative disciplines to set the pace of the transition. Finally, we will evaluate strategies for future valorisation to push the pace of transition. 

The kick-off meeting will include a public event open for in-person and remote participation on 11 March at 18:00 CET. This event will include contributions from:

- Annela Anger-Kraavi, Cambridge University, recent Vice-Chair of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA)

- Rebecca Braun, Executive Dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway

- Roman Dziadkiewicz, Media artist, member of UKRAiNATV and assistant professor at the art academy, Krakow

- Bernd Fesel, CEO of EIT Culture & Creativity, the latest Knowledge and Innovation Community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology

- Johanna Leissner, Scientific Representative for Fraunhofer, Chair of the EU OMC group strengthening cultural heritage resilience for climate change

- James Livesey, Vice-President for Research and Innovation of the National University of Ireland, Galway

- Joost Raessens, Chair of Media Theory at Utrecht University and Project Coordinator of the HE project: Strategies

- Emil Røyrvik, Professor at NTNU’s Department of Sociology and Political Science

- Denis Jaromil Roio, Artist, software developer and founder of the Dyne.org foundation and the Forkbomb company
