2024 Practice PhD and Academy Call for Applications

Transart offers a unique, interdisciplinary atmosphere, uniting all creative fields under one nomadic roof. Where standard programs divide creative disciplines, our approach generates the cross-pollination of ideas, creating fresh work and expanding the definitions of art, curating and the creative process. Participate in international intensives, retreats and residencies, monthly trans-local weekend sessions, work independently with dedicated advisors and peer groups, earn a Practice PhD, or further your independent creative praxis through the Academy with other international advanced practitioners.

 

PhD Trajectory

Your practice will entwine making, writing and reflection to become rigorous and original creative research—in short, your practice IS the research. Your research will culminate in submitting an integrated thesis, which can include a presentation, exhibition, publication, reading, performance, screening, workshop and other forms of dissemination. Transart's praxis-centered programs revolve around local and virtual residencies. Participate in presentations, symposia, fora, topical workshops, research seminars, exhibitions, screenings, cultural excursions, sound baths, listening sessions and other events to enrich your praxis. Past residencies have included Mexico City, Liverpool and New York, Berlin and Nairobi. 

 

Practice PhD

Transart's Creative Research PhD is for everyone with a specific project or question whose practice embodies or essentially drives their research. Your tenure in the program will transform your practice and your awareness of what it can do, significantly contributing to knowledge and practice in your field and augmenting your credentials for academic positions, grants and inclusion in research projects. 2024 will start with the Liverpool residency: July 22-26. Academy Options

Our academy sessions support you individually and incrementally. Sessions advance in three-month trajectories. You may optionally start with a Praxis Refresher course in the spring, continue with a PhD Explorer course in the fall, apply for the PhD, receive a PhD Preflight scholarship for spring, and embark on a PhD in the summer. Each course is tailored to align with whichever stage of advanced creative practice you've reached. About Transart

Since 2004, the Transart Institute for Creative Research has been the foremost developer of low-residency, interdisciplinary, international creative research programs. Designed and run entirely by artists, the Institute offers practice-based programs, generating space for creativity, experimentation and radical thinking in every form.
