Resident Academic Full Time Post in Dance Studies 
Department of Dance Studies – School of Performing Arts
 
 
Applications are invited for a Resident Academic Full Time Post in Dance in the Department of Dance Studies within the School of Performing Arts, University of Malta. 
 
The appointee will be required to contribute to the teaching, research, administrative, outreach and other activities of the Department of Dance Studies at the School of Performing Arts.
 
The appointment will be on an initial definite four-year contract of employment. Following the successful completion of the one-year probationary period, the Resident Academic will commence a two-year Tenure Track process. At the conclusion of this two-year period of service, the Resident Academic will be subject to a Tenure Review.
 
Candidates must have a Ph.D. or D.Phil. in the field of dance specialisation obtained from a reputable University and have teaching experience at tertiary level. Applicants with professional doctorates are not eligible. The selected candidate is expected to be fully competent to teach and undertake supervisory duties at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The successful applicant will be required to present the original certificate upon request by the Office for Human Resources Management & Development.
 
The applicant must have interdisciplinary theoretical expertise in Dance Studies grounded in at least two of the following areas: Dance and Technology, Dance Science, Critical Theories on Dance Studies, Practice Research, Performance Theories, Dance Education, and Inclusive Dance Practice. In addition, the candidate must have dance training background and teaching experience at intermediate and advanced level in a contemporary form of dance practice that draws upon their own research. The candidate will be expected to teach and carry out research in these areas as well as in related areas as required and in discussion with the Head of Department. The appointee will also be expected to make substantial contribution to the development of the School of Performing Arts.
 
The Resident Academic Stream is composed of four grades, being Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer. Entry into the grade of Lecturer or above shall only be open to persons in possession of a Ph.D. or a D.Phil. within strict guidelines established by the University.
 
The annual salary for 2024 attached to the respective grades in the Resident Academic Stream is as follows:
 
*Professor; €48,818 plus an Academic Supplement of €33,119 and a Professorial Allowance of €2,330
*Associate Professor; €44,864 plus Academic Supplement of €25,377 and a Professorial Allowance of €1,423
Senior Lecturer; €40,677 plus an Academic Supplement of €18,358
Lecturer; €34,008 with an annual increment of €641 to €35,931 and an Academic Supplement of €14,932
 
 
*The University will only consider appointing an applicant at the grade of Professor or Associate Professor, when the applicant already holds an equivalent appointment at a University or Research Institute of repute.
 
The University of Malta will provide academic staff with financial resources through the Academic Resources Fund to support continuous professional development and to provide the tools and resources required by an academic to adequately fulfil the teaching and academic research commitments within the University.
 
The University may also appoint promising candidates as Assistant Lecturers who do not yet possess a Ph.D.  provided that applicants:
 
Are already at an advanced stage of their studies for the Ph.D. and have already transferred successfully their registration from M.Phil. to Ph.D.; and
Shall be able to complete their studies by not later than two years in order for them to be placed on the two-year tenure track during the third and fourth year of their contract.
 
The above-mentioned criteria are subject to the satisfaction and scrutiny of the Selection Board.
 
Assistant Lecturer with Masters; €31,764 with an annual increment of €596 to €33,552 and an Academic Supplement of €5,294
Assistant Lecturer; €29,589 with an annual increment of €531 to €31,182 and an Academic Supplement of €5,037.

Applicants are also required to submit a full twelve-week teaching syllabus (totalling to 24 teaching hours) for a second-year study-unit in one of the areas listed above, i.e. Dance and Technology, Dance Science, Critical Theories in Dance Studies, Practice Research, Performance Theories.
