Job Advertisement: University Professor for Musical Performance Art with a focus on Artistic Research and Development and Exploration of the Arts

The Gustav Mahler Private University for Music (GMPU) in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is offering a position starting 01.03.2025 in the form of a part-time contractual employment relationship (20 hours per week, equivalent to 50%) for a fixed term of 5 years.

Professional profile:

Musical Performance Art (MAK) is a central concept at GMPU and refers to artistic instrumental and vocal education. The university professorship for MAK is intended to contribute to both the foundational degree programs and the planned artistic doctorate (PhD in the Arts). It is intended to anchor the areas of Artistic Research (AR) and the Development and Exploration of the Arts (German: Entwicklung und Erschließung der Künste, EEK) in the BA and MA degree programs and provide students with skills that prepare them for the third cycle.

The GMPU is currently undergoing an accreditation process for the establishment of an artistic doctorate (PhD in the Arts) in the field of Artistic Research, in which Musical Performance Art is one of the three main areas of research alongside Composition and Sound & Intermedia.

We are therefore looking for an experienced and ambitious artistic personality who

  • receives international attention and recognition for their artistic work and research
  • has a broad knowledge of the various practices beyond their own instrument
  • has the ability to engage in open discourse and is familiar with the current positions of EEK and AR
  • has an interest in key university topics such as interdisciplinarity and collaborative processes and is committed to inclusion and diversity
  • creates awareness among students of the role of artistic creation in social contexts
  • has didactic skills in the higher education/university sector and enthusiasm for working with students, and has several years of university teaching experience (ideally with experience in supervising dissertation projects)
  • prepares students for independent and critical artistic reflection and research in their propaedeutic phase
  • is also able to supervise doctoral candidates in the MAK research focus within their respective projects
  • has contacts in the arts, culture and research sector, which become effective in the support of students and graduates and in building national and international networks.

Tasks: (based on the provisions of the university‘s regulations)

  • responsible representation, promotion and further development of the discipline in its entirety
  • participation in the further expansion of AR at the GMPU through the development, planning, acquisition and implementation of research projects, preferably also at international level
  • acquisition of third-party funds
  • independent research and publication activities or comparable artistic activities
  • participation in artistic or artistic-scholarly projects at the GMPU
  • further training for GMPU scientific/artistic staff, particularly in the field of EEK
  • teaching and supervision primarily in the BA and MA degree programs (MAK)
  • supervision of theses (incl. dissertations) and committee examination activities
  • further development of curricula with regard to future professional fields (e.g. implementation of EEK and AR courses)
  • participation in academic self-administration, in organizational, administrative and committee tasks as well as in evaluation measures and professional-organizational development work

Employment requirements:

  • a completed doctorate in a relevant subject and a completed artistic degree
  • an international reputation as an artist-researcher with an extensive and diverse practice at the highest level
  • several years of teaching experience at university or college level (experience in higher education didactics)
  • outstanding research activity, evidenced by own research proposals, research projects or publications or outstanding artistic activity with international appeal
  • skills in representation, networking and project management (leading and organising projects)
  • very good written and spoken German and English skills (or, if German skills are insufficient, a willingness to acquire these skills within a transitional period)
  • ability to work in a team, organization and communication skills
  • experience in the supervision of dissertation projects is desirable

Payment:

According to wkP4 of the GMPU regulations: Gross monthly salary (full-time employment, 14 times a year): € 6,218.30 A higher salary can be earned depending on professional experience.
