MASTER OF ART AND DESIGN FOR THE PUBLIC SPACE

The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP) proudly presents its Master's program in Art and Design for the Public Space. This advanced degree is designed for students with diverse backgrounds in Art and Design, as well as fields such as Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscaping, and Communication and Product Design. Our program aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage and intervene in public spaces through social, political, urban, and virtual approaches.

Program Overview The Master's program offers a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Students will engage with research methodologies, professional skills, and project-based learning, supported by expert tutors selected for their specialized knowledge. The course is designed to foster critical and reflective thinking, enabling students to approach public space interventions with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary mindset.

Course Structure The first year of the program is structured around a set of foundational curriculum units that cover research methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and practical project work. These units are designed to provide students with a solid grounding in the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct consistent and impactful research. The second part of the course includes one Research and Project Methodology subject of advanced level, as well as the development of Project Work in conjunction with a written component, for which supervision, wherever possible, will be called advisers of recognized merit in order to promote a broad scope of critique and scientific and artistic inputs. 

Aims and Objectives The Master's program aims to provide further education for graduates from various fields, allowing them to specialize in the numerous aspects of public space and its challenges. Public space is seen as an operative and critical territory, encompassing areas from public squares to museums, printed media, and the Internet. This interdisciplinary approach enables candidates to address issues from their unique professional backgrounds, whether they are artists, architects, performers, or designers.

Application and Course Information The application process is designed to identify candidates who demonstrate originality, commitment, and a strong motivation to further their studies. The selection criteria are as follows:

  1. Portfolio + Professional CV (40%): The portfolio should showcase your artistic, architectural, performative, or educational practice relevant to the Master's scope. It must include a well-organized presentation of your work and a professional resume highlighting recent jobs or occupations. Originality and commitment are key.
  2. Academic Curriculum + Scientific Curriculum (40%): Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in fields such as art, design, architecture, or humanities. Validation of any diplomas should be completed by the enrollment date. For degrees obtained abroad, appropriate authentication of documents is required.
  3. Letter of Intent / Interview (20%): The letter should outline your motivation for pursuing this Master's degree and the reason why you believe you are a suitable candidate. An interview may be conducted if deemed necessary by the Scientific Committee.

Required Documents: Portfolio, CV, Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, Letter of Intent, and a photocopy of your identification document.
