Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – School of Music

PhD Artistic Research in Lucerne Call for applications 2025 / Information about Study Days Artistic Research in Music / Mentoring program

In 2022 the Lucerne School of Music (Switzerland) of Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts introduced a collaborative program with the University of Music Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) that offers a new educational pathway following the completion of a Master of Arts in Music or Music Education: the PhD in Artistic Research.

The PhD in Artistic Research is a postgraduate program that combines music practice and music research. The education culminates in the conferral of an internationally recognised doctoral degree (PhD) by the University of Music Freiburg. The focal point resides in cultivating scholarly acumen, nurturing research proficiency, and fostering musical-artistic excellence, with the option of specialisation in the domains of performance (classical or jazz), conducting, or composition.

The curriculum includes comprehensive instruction in music practice and research methodologies, complemented by mentoring from both artistic and academic supervisors. Collaborative colloquia with other institutions offer avenues for interaction within a global community of PhD scholars.

Please note that we offer mentoring for early researchers interested in pursuing a PhD in Artistic Research. The mentoring program offers students targeted preparation to develop a convincing and structured exposé for their PhD application. A limited number of spots are available in the program. See below for more information.

On November 13 and 14, 2024, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – School of Music will host public Study Days focused on Artistic Research. We are honoured to announce that Kathleen Coeessens (Conservatoire royal de Liège), Barbara Lüneburg (Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz) and Arabella Teniswood-Harvey (University of Tasmania) will be presenting as keynote speakers. Representatives from the newly established graduate school Freiburg-Lucerne, as well as doctoral candidates from the partner institution in Bern will participate. The event is open to the public.
