Research Centre Art & Society (Hanze) and Research Centre Arts in Society (University of Groningen)

Encounters in Artistic Research

Encounter fellow researchers and explore various methods of conducting research in the arts. This research community event is for professors, lecturers, researchers (PhD/PD candidates, postdocs, teacher-researchers), teachers, and (MA) students in the arts. The event offers inspiring days filled with presentations, workshops, an exhibition, and discussions at Minerva Art Academy in Groningen. The program is composed by Anke Coumans (Hanze), Ann-Sophie Lehmann (RUG), and Jan van Boeckel (Hanze).

The first day focuses on artistic research as a "love practice", emphasizing openness, vulnerability, and trust, akin to love. This attitude underpins meetings on key themes: art and care, art and technology, and art and rural areas. New insights on artistic research methods such as autoethnography, body-centered research, and material-based research will be shared. Additionally, Tale Næss will give a keynote speech, followed by a performance of the Kiribati Notes at the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen.

During the second day, artistic PhD candidates eloborate together about how to write about their research. They share experiences and practices, pose questions, and formulate ambitions through public dialogues. Researchers with an art-based / artistic PhD respond. Click here for the program overview.

Encounters in Artistic Research offer a place for dialogue and inspiration. We do not have the option of joining by livestream, because real life encounters complement our program. Participation is free. There is an option to join one or two days. The contributions are fully in English.
