GMPU: Job Advertisement

The Gustav Mahler Private University of Music (GMPU) in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is offering a position starting 01.10.2025 as

University Professorship for Artistic Research

with a focus on Musical Performance Art

in the form of a part-time contractual employment relationship (20 hours per week, equivalent to 50%) for a fixed term of 5 years. Following the accreditation of an artistic doctoral programme at GMPU, the professorship may be made permanent.

Professional Profile:

At the core of Artistic Research (AR) are artists as involved researchers, whose practice is a central part of the method. This aims to take the artistic process as the actual object, wherein performing, composing, creating objects, exhibiting, intervening, etc. act as vehicles for generating new knowledge and insights. Within the overall field of AR, the professorship represents Musical Performance Art (MAK) as area of research. MAK is a central term used at GMPU to describe a holistic artistic approach to instrumental or vocal education, including innovative aspects of performance culture. Using a variety of methods, MAK places the musicians’ perspective at the centre, while considering all other actors (such as audience, composers, etc.) in a relational way. MAK integrates established performance traditions, explores their potential and explores them.

The GMPU is currently undergoing an accreditation process for the establishment of an artistic doctorate (PhD in the Arts) in the field of Artistic Research, in which Musical Performance Art is one of the three main areas of research alongside Composition and Sound & Intermedia.

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious artistic personality who

  • has a broad knowledge of the various practices beyond their own instrument
  • wants to bring to fruition, through teaching and research, the field of MAK as outlined above
  • is capable of supervising doctoral candidates specialising in the MAK research area within their respective projects
  • has didactic skills in the higher education/university sector and enthusiasm for working with students, and has several years of university teaching experience (ideally with experience in supervising dissertation projects)
  • can contribute national and international contacts in the arts, culture and research sector to support students and graduates and to build national and international networks.

Tasks: (based on the university’s regulations)
