Artistic-Academic Doctorates in Music

The Music department and the Research department at the Hochschule der Künste Bern (HKB) invite applicants interested in artistic-academic doctoral studies. In partnership with the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg (Germany), we have developed a structured study programme based on the HKB’s Specialized Master’s in Research to equip exceptional performers or composers with artistic research skills. The institutional partnership, the binational graduate school in artistic research Freiburg-Bern provides an active, international research environment that allows students to graduate with a PhD in music. The programme includes: 

• One-to-one tuition with academic and artistic supervisors
• Extra tuition with external supervisors for specific expertise that is not covered in-house
• Options for both performers and composers
• Supervision in English, German, and French

Upcoming ‘Study Days for Artistic Research in Music’, 13^th and 14^th November 2024 at the Hochschule Luzern Musik, Salquin (in-presence). A rotating research event in the context of a parallel partnership between the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and the Hochschule Luzern.
