Call for applications: Master’s programmes in choreography, dramaturgy and live art / performance

Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy welcomes applications for its international master’s programmes that uniquely combine theory and research with practice in the fields of choreography, dramaturgy and performance / live art. The master’s programme in choreography is introducing a new theoretical research study option in the January 2025 admissions. Studies begin in August 2025.

Choreography

The master’s programme in choreography consists of two years of full-time studies that will help you develop your artistic and research skills and knowledge. You will grow your critical awareness and understanding of contemporary choreography, its practices, strategies and discourses, as well as the interactive relationship between art and society. In the 2025 admissions there are two different study options in choreography: artistic practice and research, and the new option of theoretical research. The prevailing mode of study is research-oriented. The overall pedagogy emphasises the thematic trajectory of each student, supported by critical, reflective, analytical and explorative discussions with peers and teachers.

Comparative dramaturgy and performance research (CDPR)

The double-degree programme offers students a unique opportunity to experience distinctly different forms of dramaturgical thinking and performance cultures. This model enables a comparative approach to dramaturgical practice and theory. As a student in this programme you will study two semesters at two European universities and graduate from both. In addition, you will study in multidisciplinary contexts, including collaborative productions, research-oriented artistic projects and institutions that combine artistic activities and research.

Live art and performance studies (LAPS)

The aim of the programme is to collectively investigate what performance does, how it does and the effects performance may have in society. The programme combines critical thinking with experimentation in artistic work and artistic research. As a student you will be empowered to develop and activate new knowledge of performance and its theory. The programme provides practical and theoretical tools for artists who wish to explore, develop and distribute their practice and knowledge in society.

Studies

Art, performances, education and research are in constant interaction with each other at Uniarts Helsinki. Acquiring a set of skills is the foundation to build off of, but the ultimate goal is to develop students’ critical thinking and artistry. All international master’s programmes at Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy consist of two years of full-time studies and require onsite attendance.

We welcome applications between 8-22 January 2025 (ending at 3pm local Finnish time on the last day). The application process includes an electronic application and advance assignments, as well as entrance examinations.
