Call for Applications: Postdoctoral Research Fellow at FFA BUT

The Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) at Brno University of Technology (BUT) invites applications for its postdoctoral programme aimed at early-career researchers and practicing artists working within the broad field of artistic research. The current call is for two full-time positions, with an expected start date of 1 October 2025 and an end date of 30 September 2026 (or as agreed).

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed a PhD (or have official confirmation of defense by September 2025) no more than 8 years prior to the application date. The 8-year eligibility window may be extended to reflect time spent on maternity/parental leave, long-term illness, or caregiving responsibilities.

Job Description and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting the proposed research project in close cooperation with the FFA Research Centre. As part of their academic duties, they will deliver at least one lecture or seminar within the doctoral study programme during the academic year. In addition, they are expected to offer a public presentation—such as a lecture, workshop, or similar event—aimed at sharing the development and outcomes of their research. Dissemination of results is an essential component of the position and must include a clear affiliation with FFA BUT. For scholarly research, this will take the form of peer-reviewed publications; for artistic research, publications of artistic research and exhibitions will serve as key modes of dissemination.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a clearly written and concise research proposal (maximum 3 pages), which must include the project title, a summary of the research focus, key questions and methodologies, a motivation for undertaking the project at FFA BUT, a proposed timeline, an outline of any technical or material resource requirements, and a description of the expected outputs. In addition, applicants must provide a structured curriculum vitae that includes current contact information. Applicants are expected to provide a list of academic publications or a portfolio showcasing research projects relevant to the proposed topic. Artists are encouraged to submit a portfolio documenting artistic activities that demonstrate a connection to the aims and focus of the proposed research. Scanned copies of academic degree certificates must also be included in the application.

What We Offer

We offer a supportive and inspiring environment within one of the leading art institutions in the region, with access to state-of-the-art research and production infrastructure. The position provides opportunities for professional growth and interdisciplinary collaboration, along with financial support for creative and research activities. The successful candidate will be employed on a one-year full-time contract (1.0 FTE), starting in October 2025, with a salary in accordance with the BUT Remuneration Regulations and the possibility of performance-based rewards. Additional benefits include flexible working hours, a healthy work-life balance, access to professional development courses, and employee benefits such as discounted mobile plans and a meal allowance. In the first round, submitted applications will undergo internal review based on the following evaluation criteria: the originality and research potential of the proposed project, the relevance of its aims and expected outputs to research at FFA, and the feasibility of the project within a one-year timeframe. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to participate in an online interview as part of the second round.
