Haapaniemenkatu 6, 00530 Helsinki

The 9th Colloquium on Artistic Research in the Performing Arts, CARPA9, explores pedagogical approaches to, in, and for performance making in a climate changed world. CARPA9 is an international platform bringing together different perspectives and concerns around understanding and enacting climate justice in performing arts training and research. The global ecological crisis calls for the exploration of new practices in performance production across areas such as set, costume, lighting, and sound. We are interested in how researchers, practitioners, educators and mentors have integrated sustainability and ecological thinking into their performance making processes.

CARPA9 is an integral part of the Finnish national field of artistic research. It introduces the local research community with new and high-level experts. It gathers to Helsinki a cohort of critical international researchers helping the local artists and researchers in networking and keeping themselves up to date on timely trends in the field. CARPA9 provides a window for Finnish artist-researchers to make their work known internationally.

A key aim of CARPA9 is to foster pedagogical research in performing arts that frames sustainability as one of opportunity and innovation for both current and emerging theatre makers. It enables discussion and sharing of global experiences on how to integrate ecological thinking and sustainable processes into pedagogy, and how we can inspire long-term solutions to environmental and social sustainable issues in performing arts.

Globally, the last ten years have seen a decisive shift in the way the performing arts have begun to address environmental issues. Climate justice has become one of the guiding principles in performance making across the world. Many practitioners and study programs lack the knowledge and resources to integrate these sustainability aspirations into their practices. This shows that there is a great need for eco-pedagogical development and research.
