Deep Time: Art and Ecology in the Arctic Archipelago

We invite artists of all disciplines to apply for DEEP TIME, an immersive residency at the intersection of art and ecology, held on the remote island of Fleinvær in Arctic Norway.

DEEP TIME unfolds in a landscape of elemental presence — no cars, no shops, no artificial noise, no visual clutter. Just sea, rock, sky, and shifting light. Here, time stretches. Sensory attention sharpens. Artistic process deepens.

This interdisciplinary residency is for visual artists, writers, composers, photographers, performance and body artists, choreographers, dancers, movement practitioners, filmmakers, sound artists, and artistic-researchers whose work engages environment, temporality, and place — whether through material, concept, ritual, or imagination. We welcome those working in any form or medium who are drawn to explore the layered entanglements of art and ecology.

Themes include (but are not limited to):
• Deep time and geologic rhythms
• Climate, impermanence, and change
• Ecological systems and nonhuman temporalities
• Site-specificity and sensory practice
• Landscape, soundscape, and the politics of attention
• Sustainability as lived, creative practice
• Duration, slowness, and expanded perception

The November residency invites creative immersion. The long nights and aurora-lit skies offer a rare container for quiet work, collaborative exchange, and deep focus. The residency fee includes sleeping cabins, shared creative spaces, and time to work independently or with the group.

Applications are reviewed on a ROLLING basis until July 13, 11:59pm EST.

Space is limited to 8 artists — early submission is encouraged.

Duration of residency

The residency is 2 weeks. To minimize our impact on the environment and maximize our time together, artists must arrive and depart on the scheduled dates.

Arrival and Departure dates:

  • Session A) arrival November 1, departure November 15
  • Session B) arrival November 16, departure November 30

Accommodation

Private and shared sleeping cabins are available.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance

Artists and researchers from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Studio / Workspace

The primary studio and working space is the island and we encourage artists to work with the natural environment as much as possible. As well as your sleeping cabin, you’ll have the use of the kitchen house, studio house, Njalla (tower house inspired by Sami design), wood-fired sauna and bath house (plus two toilets).

Fees and support

Cost (per artist):

  • Individual Sleeping Cabin: $2600 / €2350
  • Double Sleeping Cabin: $1800 / €1650
  • Triple Sleeping Cabin: $1500 / €1350
  • All food for meals is included in the fee
  • Artists are responsible for travel to Bødo where they can take a public ferry to the island on the scheduled arrival date.
Expectations towards participants

There’s no pressure to present—how you spend your time is entirely up to you. In a culture of busy-ness and overproduction, this residency offers a rare space to listen with and observe  ecologies—natural and relational—and to create in dialogue with them. We’ll support the small, curated cohort with optional workshops and guided practices tailored to your needs. Our primary expectation is that you arrive ready to connect—with the unique environment and with the seven other artists in residence.
