VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research

OPEN CALL VIS #16

The call for VIS Issue 16 is open. The theme is Beyond Compliance: Ethics in Artistic Research. Deadline for exposition proposals is 27 November 2025.

Editor: Eliot Moleba

In artistic research, ethics often appear as a peripheral concern – obligatory, yet rarely transformative. Ethical considerations are frequently reduced to the fulfilment of legal or institutional requirements, peripheral to the artistic and intellectual core of the work. However, this call seeks to highlight artistic practices that are shifting this perspective. We are inviting artistic researchers who explore ethics not only as a constraint but a generative force that shapes, directs, and enriches their practice.

In this issue, we are looking for contributions that interrogate the role of ethics in their historical, political, and material entanglements in direct relation to artistic research. How might ethical frameworks, principles, and questions actively inform and shape the creative process and practice? How can ethics move from just being a compulsory checkpoint to becoming a dynamic generative force within the research? What does it mean to think through ethics in artistic research beyond compliance? What does it mean or do to embed ethics at the heart of artistic inquiry? And what tensions arise when ethics play a central role in shaping the artistic inquiry, and how can these tensions be generative?

We welcome contributions that examine how ethical considerations can be a productive and generative force – shaping methodologies, processes, and outcomes – rather than merely safeguarding the boundaries of artistic research.

As VIS is a Nordic journal for artistic research, we especially encourage contributions in Nordic languages. However, we also welcome international proposals and/or bilingual expositions to deepen the exploration of this field, and to increase accessibility and exchange.
