SAR Newsletter October 2025

Open Call: SAR Special Interest Group for Language-based Artistic Research - PRACTICE SHARING III

The SAR Special Interest Group for Language-based Artistic Research invites submissions for PRACTICE SHARING III, an online platform dedicated to sharing examples of language-based artistic research.

Artist-researchers working with language—across visual arts, performance, film, theatre, music, choreography, literature, and beyond—are invited to contribute.

This edition focuses on specific practices, processes, or methods that explore how enquiry in-and-through language manifests in artistic research. Submissions are invited that respond to the call: How does your enquiry in-and-through language-based artistic research manifest in specific practices and examples?

Deadline: Friday, 28 November 2025 (noon CET)

New Portal Partners Join SAR and the RC

We are excited to welcome five new Portal Partners: NLA University College (Norway), Royal Academy of Music (London), Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, LUCA School of Arts (Belgium), and Research Unit Collaborations, University of Potsdam (Germany).

Each partner contributes distinctive perspectives on artistic research, strengthening the RC’s international community and commitment to open, practice-based knowledge sharing — We are grateful for their partnership and look forward to seeing their portals develop!

Upcoming RC Webinars

Advanced Creation of Expositions, Monday 10.11 – 10:30-12:30 CET

In addition to our usual new user intro webinars, we are this time doing a more open session for advanced users of RC. We will not cover any topics discussed in the normal webinar, but provide this as an opportunity to deal with more advanced topics and uses of the exposition format. Examples include using CSS, layering, embedding external elements, generating exposition content and interactivity in SVG graphics. The specific topics discussed will depend on participant input: You will be able to provide these in the form when you enlist.

We expect that partakers have already created at least a few expositions and made them public, and this may be used as a selection criterion for participation.

Journals Publishing Policy, Friday 21.11 – 13:00-15:00 CET

The opportunities for artistic research outcomes to be peer reviewed are still quite limited, and SAR aims both to provide for more peer review options and to stimulate use of the opportunities that exist. In this Webinar, three of the Research Catalogue-based journals, ArteActa, The Hub and VIS present their editorial policies and provide us with insights into their selection and peer-review procedures.

These journals use the RC as a publication platform, all are multilingual and all of them require submission by the exposition format(s) for publication at the RC. In this webinar, members of the respective editorial teams will present their policies and procedures and answer questions from the audience.

Upcoming Portal Partner Thematic Seminars

Start-Up Seminar for New Portal Partners, Monday 12.11 - 15:00-17:00

In this session we will discuss how new portal partners can quickly get their RC portal up and running. We discuss the communication strategy, design of the portal landing page, basic workflows of handling content submissions within the portal. We will also showcase example uses of how other portals have used the possibilities of the RC to support research projects and events and showcase them in the portal.

With inputs by our Communication Officer Linnea Langfjord Kristensen and the Research Catalogue Management Team Casper Schipper and Daniele Pozzi, as well as the other well experienced members of RC Monitoring Group, this will be a hands-on session for new portals, where we will focus on how new portal partners can quickly get their RC portal up and running. Finally, we will also introduce a newly developed package of onboarding support for new portals.

Sign up is open to all Portal Partner via the form and pdf shared on Basecamp.

Towards an RC Closed Vocabulary, Monday 08.12 – 13:00-15:00 CET

At the June Portal Partner Meeting in Prague, we informed about a new initiative together with the librarians from some of our portal partners to jointly create an RC Closed Vocabulary based on the most frequently used free key words already in circulation among the RC users. This will be generated with the use of AI and curated by our group, and the implementation of this closed vocabulary into published expositions will be in the hands of our portal partners’ librarians.

For this reason, we strongly encourage all our partners to bring in your librarians for this meeting.

Save the date! More information and sign up link will follow...
