Listening to / in Public Space

As an artist working often with audio walks I often have the nagging thought: does using headphones to present sound in public space immerse the listener in a bubble, separating them from their surroundings?
This research looks at the form of the audio walk and the possibilities of using binaural recording, narrative devices and locative media to prioritise engagement with the environment.
In addition it documents the re-activation of an older work of mine in a app using geo-location and it collects documentation of a number of walk-pieces including scripts, audio files, maps and other background information.

The exposition ”Smitte som skapelsemaskin” (Contagion as a creation machine) is based on the artistic project ”Kroppsliturgiske eksperimenter” that explores the boundaries emerging when performing arts and human bodies enter the sacred space of a church. To what extent does the church as a social and architectural environment, shape human conceptions of bodies? What might the history of theology and of the Christian church tell humans about our relationship to our own bodies? The pandemic has put the above questions in a new light: It made the skin a potential carrier of life-threatening infections. At the same time, we suffered the lack of mutual human touch and of physical presence. Caught between the fear of being infected by touch and a hunger for being touched, the project ”Kroppsliturgiske eksperimenter” appears both challenging and attractive. Crisis has produced a desire for new forms of touch, in art and in human life. This contribution to VIS was created in collaboration and dialogue with performer Hanna Barfod, priest, professional singer and research fellow Mathias Gillebo, film photographer and editor Mats Christian Rude Halvorsen and priest Arne Jor.

Can an interaction between the inhabitants of a city in a public space lead to a dialogue causing an artistic expression? And is there really a need to define certain places for the arts when we have common spaces / online platform that can fulfill the same function? The goal of this thesis is to give an insight into an artistic project I have been implementing into public space of Prague since Autumn 2021 which is based on the concept of present miscommunication of the arts and digs deep into the possibilities of starting a dialogue through the streets of the city.
By using the city as a certain intermediator, the project aims to outline the potential of the place, to display the city as a kind of mosaic of intersecting lives taking place so close together, and to show different perspectives on the very same place.
The aim of the project is to point out a kind of nuance of anonymous intimacy, which we all experience in the hustle and bustle of the metropolis on a daily basis and to investigate the potential of arts in public space leading to dialog.
