  Performing Diffraction: Reading Michael Baldwin’s Erasure through Karen Barad’s Agential Realism Erasure sounds through the superimposition of waves of activity, ostensibly quasi-independent though in constant interference with each other. Erasure begins to sound in the moment of intersection of these disparate but inseparable strands of physical material, interwoven into the constantly transforming aural material of the piece. This web of interference, referenced in the title as erasure, can also be constructively conceived through a variety of other theoretical tools. Donna Haraway’s conception of diffraction, in particular, assists a productive reading of Baldwin’s work, and Karen Barad’s own diffractive reading of Haraway alongside her agential realist ethico-onto-epistemology provide profound and useful avenues for a performative analysis of Erasure and its materialization as a sounding phenomenon.

  After the success of their most recent project, with which they visited Durham, Basel, Wien and Darmstadt, Blechtrommel reunite for a long-awaited performance of Ryoanji, John Cage's tribute to the beauty of Ryōan-ji's rock garden in Kyoto. Winston and Pacheco themselves pay tribute to Cage's " 'garden' of sounds " with two new pieces that draw inspiration from Cage's famous musico-philosophy and Ryoanji in particular.

  This dissertation commences from the concept of poiesis, informed chiefly by Hannah Arendt’s use of the term in The Human Condition (1958) to indicate a form of creativity married to craftsmanship. This poietic framework will then be used throughout the dissertation to inform a practice-based analysis of the learning process involved with physically polyphonic notations (herein defined as notations of dissynchronous physical actions within a single performative body). Despite polyphonic asynchrony, the unifying performative demands of these pieces are the learning strategies necessary to accomplish this eventual reassembly of instrumental practice within a single, performing body. The following essays will explore the physically polyphonic repertoire of the trombone specifically as a laboratory for problematizing this poietic approach to the learning process.

  Following Rosalyn Deutsche, this essay examines how the binary opposition enforced by the boundaries of domesticity enforce containment and enclosure, particularly of excluded bodies, i.e. the homeless. This enclosure, which is read through Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the decorporealization of space, is enforced primarily through a logic of visuality and compartmentalization. This essay proposes sound as a means to counter these states of enclosure. Using concepts of dwelling (Heidegger), weaving (Ingold), and nomadism (Braidotti), a sonic recorporealization is developed through personal, domestic sound art experimentation and instrument building. The results and repercussions are then examined in the context of the singular home, its local community, and society more broadly, wherein sound is proposed as a means to instigate practices of spatial recorporealization.
