Summary

After I finished my master ‘Child and Family Studies’ cum laude at Leiden University in 2006, I started my PhD project, in which I conducted two studies concerning (1) quality of center-based and home-based childcare, and associations with cortisol and wellbeing of children, and (2) a randomized controlled trial directed at enhancing childcare quality. This project resulted in five published international journal articles and a dissertation award from the Institute for the Study of Education and Human Development because of the dissertation’s originality, the scientific significance of the work, and the impact on the public debate about childcare. In 2010, during the last period of my PhD project, I started working as a Post Doc researcher on a project focusing on early childhood gender-driven parenting. My work involved coordinating the project as a whole, supervising four PhD students and three research assistants and about fifteen students per year, observing and coding parental behavior, and processing and reporting on data. All PhD students received their PhD in 2015. In addition, I taught several courses about fathers, introduction in child psychology, observing caregiver-child interactions, and professional childcare. Currently, I coordinate two projects about gender socialization in the family, childcare, and school context. I supervise six PhD students and about ten bachelor and master students a year. In addition to gender-socialization in the school and home setting, I am involved in research in childcare (focusing on health, language development, and leadership), in schools (focusing on stress during transitions, and music introduction to young children), and university (focusing on diversity).
