ATOMOS

Aim

The multi-disciplinary practice-research described here was led by artist, film maker and photographer Ravi Deepres.

The main research aim was to explore how a novel application of 3D technology could reframe the boundaries between physical and virtual representations of the human body in contemporary dance practice in theatres and on film. The research is embedded in Atomos, a contemporary dance production created in collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor that was subsequently developed into a film for the BBC.

The concept for the work grew out of an earlier project that sought to integrate 3D technology with live dance. While this earlier project represented an important step towards introducing a 3D experience to a live dance audience, the solutions developed as a result of the research process that led to Atomos offer a yet more nuanced and pioneering approach.

The research drew on was undertaken via a process of experimentation, development and refinement that spanned rehearsals and live performances before culminating in the production of a cinematic version of the work.
