1.1. Motivation

This project is about bringing my creative process and ideas into a unity, to bring my passion for creativity into a regular and committed daily practice. I have chosen to create an artwork and a workflow that allows me to unify a process of music making, instead of trying to be completely dependent on the rules of others and its contexts. In my own belief, my job is to foster my own personal development and not neglect mundane and common discomfort around the personal experience, in a way that every matter around me matters: workflow, environment, support and tools. I have been searching for a way where only being myself, bringing my own music and story is enough. Where I don’t have to fight against the virtuoso standard to prove enough artistic expression and quality. Because, to be honest, this standard interfered with myself judgment enough

The word ‘creation’ has transformed into such a weird connotation during my career, bringing a reference of a end result of maximum productivity and quality, well maintained, produced, reinvented, constantly communicative and expressive enough to reach massive audiences in an unique level of design that it is not on a pedestal but also not invisible in the streets[4] . This definition is far from being wrong, specially in those contemporary times, but is not what creation represents to me. Personally in my life, music creation was an approach to connect with myself and the people around me

In a world of high technology and extreme dynamism, I wonder which composer has the time and aspiration to produce an orchestral work during 3 years to be played a single time for 30 people in a small village of Germany. I fought with myself a lot to find this motivation. I wonder which performer would spend months reading highly detailed scores to record an album of such an unknown composer in the countryside of Paraguay. The relationship between people, their labors and tools in the music scene have changed so much in the past few years. Nowadays it is so confusing to enable long and unrecognized experiences like those to become a reward itself, having so many systems to tell us what is truly valuable and recognizable in this world: selfies, live stream videos, spotify accounts and videoclips.

Realizing that I am a craftsman and I have to find my way to live the experience of composing as a reward by itself, I searched for a practice, a method, a music theory that could inspire me to perceive music composition with a deep and meaningful experience to me and to others. To aim for expression and quality for its own sake, to maintain instrumental practice only for the joy of doing it. I searched for an aesthetic style, a format, an artistic mission and a practice that could be integrated in one single object or instrument.

During 10 years of music education between bachelors, master, masterclasses, summer schools, artistic residences, I became motivated to understand music composition as a process of internalization of a music practice. I choose to represent mine by this new instrument format and document its conceptualization in this final master research.
