The word, Bokashi is a Japanese word for “shading off” or “gradation”. It also refers to Bokashi printing, a traditional Japanese printmaking technique. It involves applying ink onto a woodblock or other printing surface in a gradual manner, creating a smooth transition of tones from light to dark. Bokashi allows for the creation of atmospheric and ethereal effects, lending depth and dimension to the final print. The technique was used by several Japanese painting and printing masters such as Hokusai and Hiroshige. (Salter 2001, p102-106) Bokashi also is a term used in Japanese media, it could be defined as the veiling or total or partial erasure of an image, which in English is called “fogging” or “blurring”.
