This is a video recording of the keynote speech R. Murray Schafer gave at the 2011 World Forum for Acoustic Ecology in Corfu, Greece. The recording is made by Kenya DuBois Williams.

Kenya D. Williams is the CEO and Principal of Hush Soundscape Planning and Design and owner of Adore Recordings, a firm specializing in professional sound design and recording services. He serves on the Board of Directors for the One Square Inch of Silence Foundation. Kenya is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Urban Studies at Portland State University. His research field areas are Urban Planning and Acoustic Ecology. In addition, he has a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning with specializations in Environmental Planning and Urban Design.


Raymond Murray Schafer is a Canadian composer, writer, music educator and environmentalist. During the late 1960s he established the World Soundscape Project (WSP) at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Initially an educational and research group, WSP draws attention to the sonic environment and has a strong concern for acoustic ecology. Murray Schafer’s most well-known book is The Tuning of the World (1977).
