RELATIONS WITH SPACES

Suddendly I am back in Belgium, in my own home to start creating. Strange times, different approach. As I have been talking for a while of how I want to create relations with spaces where my structure is placed in, this is a good moment to start with it.

My house, an old farm house, built somewhere between 1850 en 1900, there is no data that I could find when it was originally built. The huis was bought by my parents in 1991. Before this year the house had been abandoned for three years. Before it had been abandoned the house was still used as a farm. My parent started renovating the house in almost every way... new electricity, running water, window, isolation.... But there are still some things that remain and a lot have been kept in the sheds and the old breadhouse in our garden.

I have been talking about creating a relation starting with the different directions of theatre. The directions I am ineterested in are cour and jardin. It happens to be that we call one side of the garden cour and where the grass is, is the garden (my father speaks french, so we often referred to it as jardin)... a very strange coincidence, but I think nice to work with.

I found all the photbooks of the renovation of the house, the title deed of the house, the groundplan and a photograph of one of the previous owners of the house (Leopold Vrebos).

Hoisting things up with wheels and ropes was not only used in theatre, but also in farms, for hoisting the hay, of others things that needed to be stocked somewhere dry.

The light I used in Culemborg and in the presentation of December was a fluorescent light that I bought secondhand from a farm. This fact is not that important, but when I look at the houses in the neigboorhoud (old or newer farms- they have this same type of lighting still hanging at their facade.

Trying to find the seating, this might be an interesting factor to work with. Inviting the audience to sit on this chair/bench from the farm, but with a red velvet cushion on it to see what the relation with this opulent red and gold from the theatre.

What I need to research more is what was used in old farms here in the neigboorhoud (Kortenberg)

- cross above the door

- wood outside painted green (neigbours, us, house in front)

- brickwork (roof, arches...)
