Monsuuni

DATA OCEAN THEATRE Tragedy and the Goddexxes V. KOMMOS

Pop-song by Elina Pirinen and Al2be3

(Image: Self-portrait listening for the first time to the song - Instagram post, October 19, 2022)

This piece re-imagines Sibelius's symphonic orchestral poem Aallottaret (The Oceanids) (1914) from the perspective of submersion, exploring in particular overwhelming emotions in relation to hydrofeminist poetry. A commissioned pop song, created by Finnish composer, musician, and singer Elina Pirinen and the group Al2be3 in response to Roumagnac's invitation to resonate with the entire exhibition at Galerie Titanik. In a site-specific nod to the latter's name, and indeed considering that Sibelius' composition predates the Titanic disaster by two years, this work interweaves mermaid melodies, ultramarine vibrations, ancient laments, shipwreck harmonies and a playful homage to the love theme song of the Titanic movie My Heart Will Go On sung by Céline Dion.

LYRICS

Monsuuni

Meren seinään

painat uupunet huulet

avaat reidet kohti suoraan

ja alat oottamaan

Monsuunien aalto

liukuu hitaasti sisään

täytyt solu kerrallaan

ja sekunnit lahoaa

Mustat pienet kyyt

avaruusromun päällä

ottaa aurinkoo

kii sun kyljessä

Henget ja alkuaineet

sakeassa syvyydessä

soittaa hypnoosikelloi

kuulet ne pimeydessä

Monsoon

You press your weary lips

against the wall of the sea

open your thighs straight up

and wait

The Monsoon's wave

glides slowly in

filling you, cell by cell

as the seconds decay

Little black vipers

on the space debris

bask in the sun,

clinging to your side

Spirits and elements

in the murky depth

are playing hypnotic bells

you hear them in the dark
