Hanzaki is a mythological, monstrous version of the Japanese giant salamander, known for its remarkable regenerative abilities. The name "hanzaki" derives from the belief that a salamander's body could be halved (han) and still survive and regenerate (saku).

During the summer residency at HIAP Helsinki, I crafted five oversized masks based on a photograph of a giant salamander taken in Japan during the winter of 2023.

Choreographer and performer Simo Kellokumpu, attired in a modern dance unitard adorned with a satellite image depicting an algal bloom near Suomenlinna's coast, sequentially wears each mask while executing a choreographed performance. Kellokumpu's movements are inspired by The Prophetess a dance piece by Anna Halprin that premiered in 1947 at the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco, California, and by his own 'choreoreading' practice, which considers, among manifold environmental triggers, the movements of observation satellites orbiting above the space where he performs.

The photographic documentation of this choreographic enactment is then transformed into a life-size stand-in image, inviting each exhibition visitor to step into the double role of the dancing monster, and the oracle of their destiny.
