Seanography #1
DATA OCEAN THEATRE Tragedy & the Goddexxes V. KOMMOS
In collaboration with Edouard Cabay (architect)
3D print realised by Noumena (Barcelona), 40x25cm
After studying various sea and wave machines throughout the scenic history of Western theatre, we realised raw miniature versions of several dispositifs. These ranged from Niccola Sabattini's helicoidal and blue hand-activated columns for Baroque theatre to Steele Mackaye's wave machine, intended for his unsuccessful Spectatorium project at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. (Mackaye had envisioned staging The Discovery of America by creating 1/1 scale replicas of Columbus's three ships navigating a hyper-realistic stormy sea). Using these miniature machines, we animated water in a bathtub lit by two spotlights, and collected data on water movement. After modeling the data in 3D representations, an object was printed, entitled Seanography #1.
