We encourage original and experimental contributions from both individuals and collectives addressing this years’ theme Resonance. Resonance is a prompt to address the transformative nature of artistic research as a connective element that evokes a response and qualifies our experiences as meaningful, but can also be understood as a critical tool characterised by reciprocity and mutual transformation.

The Artistic Research Alliance

As a member of The Artistic Research Alliance, SAR is thrilled to announce that the Artistic Research Alliance has officially launched its first statement, marking a significant step in our shared advocacy for artistic research at European and international levels.

The Artistic Research Alliance stands for artistic research in all its diversity, from academic institutions to independent research actors, and including research in all art practice disciplines: architecture, design, film, photography, fine art, media and digital arts, music and the performing arts, creative writing, circus etc., as well as transdisciplinary efforts. This statement represents the collective voice of our alliance and our commitment to elevating the role of artistic research in education, research, innovation, and policy discussions.

During its meeting in Vienna on 27 September 2024, the alliance reiterated the importance of collective action on key policy and funding frameworks, building on foundational documents that continue to be relevant today: The Vienna Declaration on Artistic Research (2020), The “Florence Principles” on the Doctorate in the Arts (2016), and Proposed Changes to the Frascati Manual (2022). Through regular knowledge exchange, the partners will develop and implement a shared advocacy strategy. This will include joint campaigns, policy papers, representation in stakeholder consultations and participation in interdisciplinary forums for policy and discourse development.

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Core Group and Invitation to participate

SAR is thrilled to share that the Core Group for COST Action Artistic Intelligence - Responsiveness, Accessibility, Responsibility, Equity has been elected. COST is a funding organisation for the creation of research networks, that offer an open space for collaboration among scientists across Europe (and beyond) and thereby give impetus to research advancements and innovation.

Core Group:

Paulo Luís Almeida (Chair and Grant Holder Scientific Representative); Ellen Røed (Vice-Chair); Mari Sandem (Grant Awarding Coordinator); Linnea Langfjord Kristensen (Science Communication Coordinator); Catherine Mulligan

(Adaptation Strategies WG1 leader); Florian Schneider (Collective Intelligences WG2 leader); Casper Schipper (Reference frameworks WG3 leader); Johan A. Haarberg (Policy-making and recommendations WG4 leader); Margarida Dias (Grant Holder Manager).

This pioneering project will link and connect a wide range of initiatives currently trying to explore the potential of machine learning, artificial intelligence and generative algorithms in artistic research, as well as in all creative sectors: music and visual arts, performing and written arts, architecture and applied arts. The aim is also to focus on how to strengthen annotation and referencing within artistic research, demonstrating the relevance of the Frascati research criteria transferability and – while promoting the principles of open access, open data and open source – look for solutions to secure the creators’ ownership of the data generated by the use and consumption of creativity and research in the creative arts.

We are now inviting candidates to the four working groups:

  • Adaptation Strategies (WG1)
  • Collective Intelligences (WG2)
  • Reference Frameworks (WG3)
  • Policy-making and Recommendations (WG4)

For more information on the frame of the application, see this link to the Memorandum of Understanding. For more information about the Invitation to participate, see this link.
