Issue #3 / Autumn 2024

Theme: Metabolic Media

Guest Editors: Jamie Allen and Louise Carver.

We are pleased to announce the release of HUB - Journal of Research in Art, Design and Society, Issue #3 Metabolic Media. Guided by guest editors Jamie Allen and Louise Carver, this edition offers in-depth explorations of the intersections between media, biological processes, and ecological systems.

This issue presents a collection of research expositions investigating how media practices influence, shape, and reflect metabolic systems across different scales—from individual to global ecosystems.

From the metabolic connections between humans and oceanic phytoplankton to sensory art experiences centered in the oral cavity, the articles engage readers in diverse explorations of human-environment interactions. Other contributions include a speculative journey into feminist art history inspired by Hilma af Klint, reflections on conservation and time within polluted industrial landscapes, and a creative re-examination of Martian language studies through AI.

Readers are invited to consider new perspectives on the entanglements between technological and organic processes through these studies, revealing critical insights into contemporary ecological and social challenges.

Join us in exploring these topics with HUB Issue #3 Metabolic Media, available on December 16th.
