Thank You for Joining the 16th. SAR International Conference on Artistic Research

We are still reflecting on the rich exchanges, insights, and inspiring dialogues that marked the 16th SAR International Conference on Artistic Research, held from May 7-9, 2025, at the University of Porto in Portugal and organised in collaboration with i2ADS (Research Institute in Art, Design and Society).

Increasingly important in addressing global challenges, Artistic Research offers unique, practice-based insights and this year’s conference presentations showcased diverse approaches to fostering innovation, collective intelligence, and cross-disciplinary collaboration — embracing complexity, transformation, and shared creativity.

RC Prize Winner 2024

Last week, the Executive Board of SAR announced the winner of the Annual Prize for Excellent Research Catalogue Exposition 2024!

The diversity and quality of the nominated expositions and the interest of the creators is evidence of the development of the Research Catalogue and its use for documentation, presentation and exposition of artistic research and for supervision.

The jury agreed that the exposition “Fragmente 2” by Kerstin Frödin and Åsa Unander-Scharin fulfils the criteria in an exemplary way and is therefore attributed the prize.

As the runner up finalist the jury selected the exposition “Controlled Rummage Approaches for Bummock: Tennyson Research Centre” by Danica Maier, Sarah Bennett, and Andrew Bracey and the jury decided to give a special mention or 2nd finalist place to “Why I Paint Thousands of Circles” by Leanna Moran.

About Artistic Intelligence:

Artistic Intelligence (ARTinRARE) is a four-year COST Action running between 2024 and 2028. The primary objective is to advance the (re-)integration of artistic research and conventional modes of inquiry to benefit all forms of knowledge production, including the application of new computational techniques, to practice-based research across the arts.

The emphasis is on advancing artistic research as a field of knowledge formation in terms of its quality, societal impact, and valorisation strategies; enabling deeper integration with conventional forms of research (e.g., STEM, SSH); and facilitating the implementation of artistic research approaches and methods to real-world problems across academia, civil society, public policy, and the private sector.

The SAR Executive Board endorses ELIA Recommendations for FP10

ELIA, the European League of Institutes of the Arts, has issued a call for endorsements of its recommendations for the EU’s upcoming Framework Programme 10 (FP10) for research and innovation. In its position paper, Leaping Beyond the Now, ELIA urges the European Commission to embed arts, culture, and creativity at the core of FP10.

Advocating for a transdisciplinary approach that recognises the arts is vital to addressing complex societal challenges. SAR is endorsing this paper and ELIA invites institutions, policymakers, and individuals to support this vision, aiming to ensure that artistic research and innovation are integral to shaping Europe's future.

CoARA

Responding to the discussion with our members during the SAR General Assembly we would like to draw the artistic research community’s attention to The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment, also known as CoARA. CoARA is a collective of organisations committed to reforming the methods and processes by which research, researchers, and research organisations are evaluated. SAR considers this an important debate and reference frame for artistic research in particular and encourages to get involved.

If you are interested to learn more about this initiative, CoARA’s guiding principles have been outlined in the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment
