Symposium-Festival of Artistic Research: ARTikulationen 2025, 6-9 October 2025, ‘Musical Profundity?'

We are pleased to announce the upcoming Symposium-Festival of Artistic Research ARTikulationen 2025, 'Musical Profundity?'. With the recent foundation of the Centre for Artistic Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, ARTikulationen has evolved to now combine in-depth presentations of very recent artistic research and findings, with an interdisciplinary symposium on an important theme, and a festival character with integrated SONify! performances by doctoral candidates.

SYMPOSIUM
This year’s symposium addresses the question of Musical Profundity? and its relevance to artistic research. It features a keynote by Simone Mahrenholz, a method lab by Jan Schacher, a presentation by Carla Fernandes, two trialogues (chaired by Andreas Dorschel and Deniz Peters), and a closing panel discussion. Further guest contributions in the symposium-festival include a lecture recital by Håkon Austbø, a presentation by Anna Gawboy on instrumental interfaces for live performance, and a presentation by Hubert Rutkowski on historically informed performance and its impact on contemporary interpretation.Together, these events critically reflect on profundity from multiple perspectives as an artistic, aesthetic, analytic, investigative, and experiential phenomenon.

DOCTORAL WORK
Highlights of the doctoral artistic research presentations include three Rigorosa (final doctoral presentations and defenses) by Elina Akselrud, Almog Segal, and Jakob Stillmark, as well as a mid-study presentation by Samira Spiegel. In addition to his Rigorosum, pianist Almog Segal will give a Chopin recital.

FESTIVAL
The festival character is embodied not only by examples from practice within presentations, but also by evening concerts, which integrate the doctoral festival SONify!@ARTikulationen, featuring performances by Alyssa Aska, Christoph Brünggel, Marlene Heiß, Hugo Reis, and Zsombor Sidoo, alongside guest performers.

The official opening takes place on Monday, October 6, 2025 at 17:00 CEST with an opening performance by Nenad Marković (trumpet), presenting premieres of works by Saad Haddad, Idin Samimi Mofakham, and Samir Odeh Tamimi. The closing session on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 18:45 CEST features degree and best practice award announcements. The event is held at the Theater im Palais, Leonhardstraße 19, 8010 Graz, with selected sessions (trialogues, method lab) at the Experimentallabor, Centre for Artistic Research, Maiffredygasse 12/II, 8010 Graz. All contributions are in English unless otherwise indicated by German titles and notes.
