ARTikulationen is a symposium-festival of the Centre for Artistic Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. It interweaves in-depth presentations of very recent artistic research and findings, with a symposium on an important topic in artistic research, and a festival character with evening performances of current artistic research. The event is held locally, with live-streamed Rigorosa, and ample time for questions and discussions.

The official opening is on Monday, October 6, 2025 at 17:00 CEST, with an opening performance by Nenad Marković. Over the course of four days you can hear, see, and discuss artistic research presentations from a large variety of fields ranging from current acoustic, electroacoustic, and computer composition, historically informed and contemporary performance. This year’s symposium addresses the question of Musical Profundity? and its relevance to artistic research. It combines a keynote by Simone Mahrenholz, with a method lab by Jan Schacher, and a presentation by Carla Fernandes, plus two trialogues (further including Anna Gawboy, Håkon Austbø, and Hubert Rutkowski as discussants and chaired by Andreas Dorschel and Deniz Peters), and a closing panel – all (critically) reflecting on profundity from multiple perspectives as an artistic, aesthetic, analytic, investigative and experiential quality and phenomenon. Further highlights of the Festival are three Rigorosa (final doctoral research presentations and defenses) by Elina Akselrud, Almog Segal (with an additional full solo piano recital) and Jakob Stillmark, as well as a current research presentation by doctoral candidate Samira Spiegel. The festival character appears not only by way of examples from practice within the presentations, but also in evening concerts, which integrates the doctoral festival SONify! with performances from Alyssa Aska, Christoph Brünggel, Marlene Heiß, Hugo Reis and Zsombor Sidoo. The closing/farewell session on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 18:45 CEST features degree and best practice award announcements.
